Is this the correct paint I need for clear coat? I need to make 200 million percent certain this is the correct one before I clear over some custom airbrushing.



Here is the base coat paint I used:



It didn't directly say it was for clear coat applications but on the tag on the shelf all it said was crystal clear.

I'm pretty sure this is the correct paint I'm just trying to make absolute certain. The lady at the counter didn't know and I just need the extra added belief that I got the right stuff and like I said it's going over some custom work that can't be done again.

What is the airbrushing on? What type of paint is the airbrushing done in?

 

Could you give a little more details? Personally, I don't think I would ever use that clear over any of my airbrush work. I use house of kolor UC-35 over my airbrushing, but this gets expensive.

 

 

Like I said I used the duplicolor base paint so I wanna make sure I use the same brand for clear.

You sprayed Duplicolor from an airbrush? Or do they make non rattle can paint that I dont know of?

 

I didn't know what the airbrush was sprayed with. The base coat (black) was sprayed with duplicolor

I did all the bondo/black base coat work and a friend did the airbrush. Now I need to come back and do the clear

 

So you have Duplicolor base in black, some unknown paint which I'm going to guess is a 2 part paint since it was sprayed from an airbrush, for the flames and now you're putting Duplicolor clear on top of that? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Good luck, that is the correct clear for Duplicolor but I don't know how all that going to react with each other.

 

I can tell you for sure that real urethane automotive clear will lift the black basecoat, so your best bet from where you are now is probably to rattle can clear the parts. Don't be surprised if the clear reacts with the paint used for the airbrushing, but you might be OK. Good luck with it.

 

I'm with whistler on this...You should have had someone lay down a urethane base/waterbased/waterborne, etc. base coat...Anything would have been better than mixing some nice airbrushing with a cheap base coat. Hopefully, your airbrushing will be ok.

 

My buddy didn't want to spend the 88 bucks for a pint of BC for a bumper end cap on his car so he asked me if I would spray the color with the duplacolor and then clear it with refinish clear from DuPont. I used a polyurathane. MAN it looked great for me! didn't lift or anything.

 

Well, I guess I pretty much have no choice but to go with this clear?

Well, good luck to you. In the future save yourself a lot of potential problems and use the right materials and don't mix and match products.

 

why dont you just take it to a body shop. they will probally clear coat that for next to nothin.

 

I wanted to bring this thread back up from the dead to prove to some of you guys that the airbrush was not lifted. Even though a lot of you guys doubted me, the clearcoat worked awesome and did not lift any paint. The covers and lid have been on the car for well over a month now with no issues. Even after a 3 hour drive no paint was lifted. Here were the results:

 

Cool. I was gonna suggest gettin the Truck & SUV clear from Duplicolor. Thats what I used over my Niteshades. Those look good man.

those look really nice man.... but i dont think people were doubting your worksmanship or anything... its just rule #1 when painting not to mix different systems and types of paint... you got lucky this time but you mightnot next time... its more about informing you about how these things work than patronizing you..... with that siad... post some pics of those bad boys on the car....
