Rattle canning engine bay.
I want to do a satin black engine bay in my car, to match the black accents and go with the old school engine bay look. I don't feel like waiting till I can get it into the paint booth at school, so I was going to clean it up really nice, scuff it and spray it with some rattle can paint. I want it to be durable, but honestly theres not much going on in there, so I don't have to worry about rock chips and the like... Anyone rattle can their engine bay with success?

Rustoluem is pretty kickass. I would use header/high temp paint down on the side of the motor though. Rustoleum should last pretty good. I've seen the stuff last around 20 years on alot of refrigeration equipment...and that stuff sweats all day long.

When we paint race cars that want a satin black the best bet with rattle can is Blitz Black by John Deere. Just scuff the bay using water and ajax let it dry and spray away. Comes out great for a satin finish. Good luck.

I used duplicolor black satin and a satin clear on mine and it's held up fine. I scrubbed the hell out of the old paint and scuffed it really well. The biggest problem I had was that I couldn't get everything wet. Half the engine bay would get tacky as I was spraying the second half. It resulted in a slight texture all over. Still looks alright, I need to redo it though as I've put it through two engine changes, spilled some brake fluid on it and it's been about 6 years.

i think the eastwood would be awesome stuff. the only thing is you have to have excellent control with the spray can so you wont see the spray lines. i would keep it white and just clear it.

I Rattle canned mine with the motor inplace. Just disconeccted and taped and coverd stuff with tarps, Covered wires with aluminum foil.
I used the paint from autozone that comes in the little cans for about 5.00 a can. I sanded everything, primed, then painted wet sanded and painted again then after it cured wax the heck out of it.
I get tons of compliments on how clean it looks. It is a 98 with 130,000 miles, I took on the painting due to the battery leaking acid on the passenger side wheel well and damaged the paint all the way down to the metal.

So Engine enamel or a Rattlecan Brake caliper paint would be the best?
I'm looking for a semi gloss or flat black color.
Was all would be needed for prep if you've used rust-bullet/por15 or other similar products in the past. Just sand, scuff and spray away or just spray on top of the base.

I sanded, then primed, then sanded, then wet sanded then painted again, then after it cured I waxed it. I do not know if what I did was the best way, it is just what I did.
