Default Hardtop Care?

I know that hardtops are prone to cracking, peeling, bubbling, etc. Is there anything I can do to prevent this or prolong its life. I know keeping it in the garage and out of the sun will help. I have a little bubbling in one corner and I know it's only going to get worse.

Thanks for any help.

The best thing you can do is keep it out of the sun as much as possible. Unfortunately if your's is one that's going to bubble then it's only a matter of time until it happens. It's the adhesive that GM used to attach the roof material to the structure that gasses off and eventually works it's way through the paint in the form of small bubbles or pimple like spots.

That's what I am thinkng too, but I know it'll just start to bubble again. I'm guessing you need to remove the stock adhesive and use different stuff? Which involves removing the roof.

My car is an 01, it's been garage kept it's whole life and it has very minimal bubbling. So for 6-7 years I don't consider it bad. I'll just try to keep it out of the sun as much as I can.

Thanks again.

Bumping this thread again. Talked to the body shop about a month ago, cutting out the roof as per GM's bulletin is not an option for me. Has anyone stripped and painted the roof and sail panels? How is it holding up?

I have heard of guys getting it repainted but it coming back quite soon. I think it would be a waste of money. Just save up more and get it done right. It is really the only option I would consider.

I stripped mine, did a layer of bondo/sealer over the entire thing to try to suppress the bubbles for a while. 2 days later i was doing final sanding and a few spots of bondo were rising up a little bit. redid it, bondo'd, painted, 1 month later and just almost as bad as when i started.

They didn't give me a solid estimate. My dealer uses them for all our body work so I just showed him the TSB and we talked it over. The roof alone is like $5-700. He also mentioned that it's very possible the windshield might crack too. It's a **** load of money that I am not looking to spend. Mine's not too bad either but it's slowly getting worse.

I think the guy I bought the car from went to alot of car shows. Luckily it's not that bad, but it's just the point. the car was originally bought from the local dealer. Im going to stop in and see what they say.

You're talking about sail panels though right?

What years of f-bodies is this an issue with?

I live in AZ and have seen about 2 dozen f-bodies and never noticed the roof bubbling at all.

Guys, it's not that hard to buy an OEM replacement roof and replace it on these specific cars. I've got one new in the box that I intend to use when it becomes absolutely necessary. Any competent body shop can perform this.

In fact, I can't believe someone in the aftermarket hasn't created a carbon fiber piece for aesthetics.
