Default How many bases is my paint?

I'm getting my spoiler painted and the guy quoted me a price. He said that was for a 2 base paint. He said if my car was a 3 base, he would charge a little bit more.

So my question is, is my car a 2 base or 3 base paint? Color is Monterey Maroon Metallic.

You mean two stage bases. Like if you first lay down a metallic red then throw a candyish color on top? I doubt any f body is a two stage. Ill check my color book tomorrow and look up your color. It should just be base and then clear.

well your car definately isnt a 3 stage color. basically what i think he means by 2 stage is basecoat and clearcoat or atleast thats how i refer it to people. a 3 stage color would be like white pearl on the esclades. so you would first lay down white basecoat, then the pearl and then clear over everything. i dont think any camaro has 3 stage paint.

It's more expensive because it's tougher to match perfectly due to the multitude of different hues associated with red. I forget exactly, but it has lot to do with where red falls on the color spectrum and how difficult it is to match the color perfectly. It also reacts to UV light poorly and fades differently on different materials differently. Case in point, my wife's old car was a mitsubishi that she bought new in 1997. The license plate frame in the back was plastic and faded totally differently than the trunk and bumper, it actually turned orange. Well they repainted it and gave us a lifetime warranty on it, that they honored three more times in the next 4.5 years.

So will they be able to match the spoiler, or will it be slightly off?

If they are good it will be right on. The red like on a ferrari is the hard one to match. i find it easier to match metallics, but thats just me.

if they get the color code mixture right then it should match perfectly. my hood matched 99% perfect to my 13 y/o paint.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I need to get a spoiler that fits first.
