Default Do-it-yourself paint!

When my 97 Z28 gets fixed my father is going to do the paint job. He has experience ibn doing them. I want to know what the BEST QUALITY of auto paint I can gan get for a do-it-yourself project is. Something that will actually last, look good and noone will know it wasnt done professionally. It is going back to Arctic White with Hugger Orange racing stripes (decals), and a Gloss Black engine well. Opinons please?!?!

You will probably get a lot of mixed opinions on this. I use PPG's top end stuff. I've used a lot of different brands and that's what I like...but that's me. A lot of guys like Dupont's top end stuff...it's really good also. Either of those you should be able to pick up at your local paint stores (usually not both at the same store...most either sell ppg or dupont) and are pretty reasonably priced depending on the color. And your white should be CHEAP.

Just don't use the omni clear.....Seen many many cars where the clear flakes like a early nineties domestic from several shops.

Use good clear. base coat the cheap stuff is fine.

I guess you can tell I have a vehicle painted with the omni clear with less than perfect results. Looked great for a couple years though

DCU 2021 clear is awesome! It's one of the main reasons I love ppg so much.

I've always liked DuPont's product line. Good quality paint, and very forgiving to mix/spray. With any paint work though, your paint will only look as good as the prep you do before the first drop of paint is mixed.

I'll be keeping an eye out for these then. I am going to be renting a clean room to paint in and a buddy has a good sprayer and all to use. Thanks guys!

Next time you get a can of omni clear open it up and take it outside.....Tell me if you don't see and yellow/brownish tinge. Do the same thing with a hok or good ppg clear and I can bet you money you can't see any tinge. My brother worked at a body shop and my best friend's dad had another one. I actually worked part time at my friend's in high school. Ask both places what they think of omni clear and it won't be good. My black truck had a slight hardly visible yellow/brown tint in the sun from day one. The painter that painted it was known locally as about the best around. My truck was painted a week before I bought it and trust me I would have used better paint for it had I owned it.

+3 or 4 on the white. Cheap, easy, more forgiving, and looks good.

I painted my SS spoiler in DuPont Nason artic white and it came out nice. It cost me $65.00 for a qt of paint, thinner and the cat. Later in the week, I'll be doing the SS hood for the car. It's a 97 30th anniversary edition.

I use Diamont at our shop and have been for the last 8 yrs, its great stuff. out of all the cars i have painted i would guess at least a 1000 or more i have never had a problem with any clear peeling, i cant speak for dupont i have never used it, ppg when i last used (9yrs ago) it had a really good clear but cant remember what its. pretty sure a 3yr old retarded monkey could use diamont and not have a problem.

+1 for Diamont. I have it on my 65 Mustang and it top quality. Not to mention Foose uses it in his shop too.
