I can't quite believe this, but someone built a permanent el Camino out of a 4th gen. It cost $150,000 and looks like crap in my opinion.

EL CAMARO 1996-98 HISTORY :

This is why there was made 320 Conversion Camaros in 1996 to 1998 :

IN DENMARK THE CAR TAXES ARE SKY HIGH - WORLDS HIGHEST - LIKE THIS : + 220 % ON FACTORY PRICES + 6% AMERICAN IMPORT CAR TAX. + 25 % VAT... HEY GUY's THIS IS NOT A JOKE. !! ..THE CAMARO HAS NEVER BEEN A CAR FOR THE NORMAL DANISH PEOPLE.

F-BODIES ( GM CAR BODY DESCRIPTION ) WAS PRICED IN THE MID 90'TIES HERE FOR 895.000,- DKK. WHICH EQUALS TO APPROX 120,000 TO 140,000 USD !! THEREFORE THE CONVERSION JOBs, because...

A DANSIH DEALER - SAW A PORCHE 928 BEING CONVERTED TO A TRUCK AND REGISTRATED AS A PICKUP - MEANS NO TO VERY LOW CAR TAX ADDED ON - STILL HOWEVER THE BOAT-CONTAINER AND SIDE IMPORT - HAD TO BE COVERED......BUT WHY NOT IMPORT AN CAMARO Z28 1996 MODEL AND REMOVE REARSEATS - REAR HATCH - MOULD UP AN PICKUP GLASFIBER BED AND MAKE AN NEW REARWINDOW AND WALL -

AND THE EL CAMARO WAS BORN IN MID 1996.

NOW THE PRICETAG WAS ONLY 55,000 USD, AND WITH TRACTION CONTROL 60.000 USD.

THE DANISH STATE FIGHTED AGAINST - BUT COULD DO NOTING ! He-He...

The hobby guys ordered Camaros like crasy in 1997 - all total of 320 Z-28's cars came into DK ...

...normal was 2 per 5th year into DK which have 5.2 mill citizens totally.

In the mid of 1997 - the goverment woted for a new law around pickups - something about distance from nose to steeringwheel and distance from driverseat to end of bed - all in such a way that it now was impossible to make that deal anymore.

At that time there had been mostly 1997 Z28's, but now came the 1998 model and still however - the distributor managed to mass ordered cars just prior to the deadline date - and the law could not stoped already placed car orders - so first into mid 1998 no more order was done..

The last EL CAMARO's was sold end of 1998 or just into 1999 - all 1998 models..

Mayor changes was actually done from the first done in 1996 to the 1997 models -

The first ones had a pick-up design, but constructive thinking was done = the past early to mid '80 El Caminos was popular due to exact same truck tax free registrations - and those had the GEM TOP on - what happens with an EL CAMARO's HATCH if you put that back on as a GEM TOP ??

Tax people could do nothing about it - law did not cover them ! HeHe...

So a new pick-up bed was moulded for the bed being able to receive the HATCH and Wing again like this :

SIT BACK AN LET THE FUN BEGIN - ENJOY - ABOVE BED WITH CARPET - BELOW WIDEN UP LID FOR T-TOPs :

Here is the cabin at rear - trucks have only a front seatrow in Denmark - so rearseats are gone - but same for a Corvette - both 2 seaters:

Above is our super converted El-Camaro, special rebuild rear plates and bench both with lids and saving rooms ...

....This is how it was originally rebuild - cheap soon-wood and black carpets not fitting the floor and cabin...

Vehicle mastermind George Barris of Barris Kustom Industries has done it again. The inventor of such memorable vehicles as the Beach Boys' Little Deuce Coupe, Knight Rider's K.I.T.T., Bo & Luke's General Lee, the Munster's Koach and the Batmobile has unveiled his latest invention (created with the intent for production)... the Mustang Ranchero Sports Pickup, based on a late model Ford Mustang GT.

Designed by George Barris in a contemporary design and Aerodynamic fastback styling, this limited specialty vehicle features a stainless steel bed and a fixed middle divider push button window. Body styling includes classic side scoops, functional right and left side exhausts, shaker hood scoop panels and stainless fuel door. Wheels are 17 inch Colorado Customs with flat free BF Goodrich self supporting tires, top/center insert brake lights and air-lift suspension (optional). Pinstriping by Tom Otis. Available in four colors or the convertible series which comes with a removable targa top, styled center arch, rear push button window and push button cover. Available through Galpin Ford in Van Nuys soon.

Very simple, they are not needed.

One of these days I'm going to build me a kitcar. Not a replica, but something custom and unique looking. Low and sleek, probably mid engine.

We are only limited to our imagination and if you can dream it, it can be built.

I'm starting to get mixed feelings about making an el Camino with a hard tonneau cover. I might need to have a slight angle for the back window. Kind of like the vert rears. What is the C5 model that has the short bubble window in the back?

Can someone with an image program take a pic of my stock car and do a chopped roof 5" in the front and 3" in the rear?
Thank you.

Well, I took a chance and installed my favorite PS 7 and it works with Vista!

I figure if I'm going to chop the top I may as well make it noticeable.

The only thing that's off a little is the flatness of the roof. I'm just noticing that the stock roof has a slight curve from front to rear. I'm thinking I should try and curve the new fiberglass roof a little so the whole thing flows more smoothly.

You are very creative Jason, i'd like to see you go through with something like this, would be very unique! IMO, the curved pillar doesnt flow as well, looks like a viper style IMO. I think a more straight edged pillar like the first one look best with the design of the car and flows the best. I like the first, maybe for the glass, set it back in there if you know what i mean and have it be flat. WOuld look like an exotic. Very cool!

Here's an actual chop top car. I know there's better pics out there, but I can't find them.

This first pic I moved the roof forward to simplify the side glass and to make the edges line up. The rear glass is stock for comparison.

If you still wanted to use the back glass you can trim the bottom edges and lean it forward. Then you would need to move the whole piece forward to reach the roofline. Because the top of the glass will be a bit narrow for the new wider roof you could cut it right down the center. Then fill in the center gap with a bar like the 63 split window vettes. That would look pretty cool.
