Default clear over flat/satin black

This is probably a dumb question, but if a coat of clear is sprayed over flat or satin black, will that then take on a semi-gloss/gloss finish?

Just buy the clear meant to go over flat bases. I know PPG has it, and I'm pretty sure HOK and Dupont do also. That way you have the protection of the clear coat with appearance of flat base.

We use PPG at school. If you use a flat base and want to keep it that way, PPG has a clearcoat that has a flatening agent that will let the flat retain its flatness.

You will need to use a flattener in any clear you use, other wise you'll end up with a glossy finish.

yeah for instants spies and hekker makes a semi gloss clearcoat and standox makes something similar. ppg makes a flatening agent but your gunna have to spray numerous test panels to get the color tot he right flatness. if you just spray a regular clear coat over a flat black or a satin black it will come out glossy.

Like said above, you can put a flattener in any clear. You can vary the amout of flattener to get the amout of gloss you want. You just have to be clean about it, because you can't sand and buff any dust out of it or you'll get a shiny spot.

It will turn the paint gloss, base coat is flat before you put clear on it. If you are trying to get a semi gloss finish you can use a clear with a flattening agent or use a vinyl which have three diff glosses
