Default Base coat question

I just put 3 coats on my front bumper. I was wondering if the base coat is to be wetsanded before the clearcoat? Also is the base coat once sprayed not suppose to be completely smooth?

And while i am at it has anyone else noticed that for the light pewter metallic color that the same color code from the paint store seems more silver than the tan color? just me or an issue with the paint?

the only time you wet sand base coat is if theres is dirt , or sand scratches , but you never sand and leave it before clear
when its sanded then reapply base tack it off then clear it

If it is textured, you're spraying it wrong. Not to be mean, but I don't think you should be painting at all from the questions you're asking, you have a lot more learning to do before an attempt at painting.

yea well i go by the fact you will never leanr unless you try. plus i have studied and read and asked pros for the last 3 weeks about the process. i am just asking these questions to recheck myself. and i am sure if there is any texture then the air pressure was wrong. i know that.i just need to know waht to do bout that. to lightly sand it or to leave it clear it then wetsand it. i asked a question for a answer not to be criticized.

You asked if it is supposed to be textured, I answered your question. If you don't want to be criticized, too bad, you need to get forum insurance. You're in luck, though, I offer it at a low rate. Contact me in the morning, I accept paypal.

Sand it with 800 or 600, depending on how bad it is. Wipe it down, tack it off and reshoot your base. Sometimes when wet it may look like it has a bit of orange peel, this is fine as long as it is not excessive, it will flow out with the clear.

29 psi shoud do fine for a gravity fed gun. Make sure you are mixing the base and reducer to the correct specs.

As far as the gun goes, make the pattern as wide as it can be vertically. Loosen the **** that controls the needle to let the paint through. Hold the trigger down as hard as you can and tighten the needle until you feel it push the trigger back out. Set your air tank to 38 - 42psi. I prefer 38 but thats just me.

From the sounds of it its spraying too thick so it might not be comming out the gun correctly try adding a bit more reducer and see if it sprays better on a piece of cardboard or something. Or it can be also what O town stated about the trigger needle. Make sure you have a full trigger pull.

remember there is a time frame to topcoat over the base you already put down, make sure you are in that time, if not you are goin to have to sand it anyways

Depending on the paint manufacterer you have a window in which you have to apply the clearcoat usually up to 12 hours is safe after that you will need to scuff the base put another coat on then clear.

#1 . the first time i painted something on my car i got the same effect .. my poblem was not enough air pressure ..38 to 42 psi i like 40 .. sounds like the flake in the paint isn't laying down .. hence low air pressure .. dont use to much pressure as i was told could cause a similar effect..set the gun like O-townls1 said .. good start
#2 . my car is the same color and it looks more gold to me and kinda oily looking before mixing with base maker
#3 hope this helps , and ...practice ..practice ..practice.. and keep lots of laquir thinner on hand
