You would still be able to read it. I use both. You can actually tune with one then the other, as long as there is no COS applied.

I can't believe that ANY tuner still locks the PCM especially considering the prices charged. The shops that tune the TB SS seem to get away with that BS without a problem. Go figure.

Actually, I'm going to start offering it to my later model Vette owners for their protection. If their PCM is locked, the dealer can't reflash it, and lock it.

What really cracks me up about the whole "locking PCM's" thing is that 99% of the ones that I've run across that lock their tunes couldn't tune a lawnmower correctly... who the hell wants to copy a tune that won't idle or drive worth a **** anyway...

If it's been tuned and has had a custom OS applied, you cannot tune it with a different software.

In other words, if it was tuned with HPT, and a COS applied, you cannot tune it with EFIlive. Conversely so, if the same was done with EFIlive, you cannot tune it with HPT.

If it is truly locked, you will not even be able to read it.
I am being told I have a Custom OS using EFI Live, they will only reflash to stock or update my tune... great

Sadly, that is why they locked them. So no one will know their trade secrets (to ripping people off). Like Ed, I would only lock a tune if the customer requested it, but I have never done it. I don't even know how to lock a tune.

Good luck dude!

But it doesn't explain it being locked. Let me know how you make out getting another PCM. You have a PM

It dont sound like the tune is locked. It is just using an efilive custom os. So ANYONE with efilive can still read it out and modify it.

This is the same situation if someone is using a hptuner custom os.

The Fake locking is only due to the things in the background of the tune. Tables are being used differently and if you would just open it up in another program and not know that the tables are being used differently, there would be potential for engine failure..

Thats what it sounds like to me. I've had customers ask me why I locked my tune when in fact it was never locked it had a hptuner or EFIlive custom OS on it.

Kenne Bell locked the tune on my supercharger kit on my Yukon XL 8.1. They fully disclosed this upfront and tune included/required when purchasing kit. aTheir reason was they didnt want people playing with tune and then turning around and blaming them when system didnt work well or resulted in damage to the engine.
Made sense to me.

if that is the case then you can over write the tune with HPT.. just get a stock file for your car and year model and do a write entire and start the tune from scratch..

i do this almost every day

That's totally acceptable. If they tell you up front, then you can go along with it or go somewhere else.

I agree as well. Especially on a FI set up I can totally seeing a reseller saying they will not leave it as a open PCM.

In my case I came in only looking to get my Stalling issue fixed. I left MTI Racing with a locked PCM, my car still stalling, and my wallet $600 lighter.

Sorry to hijack this thread but didn't want to start a new one when this is relevant to my situation.

I don't know anything about tuning, HpTuners Calibration Details screen it states "Locked" under Tuner Lock Status, but i'm able to log a run and look at tables. Spoke to tuner, they checked my file (not car's pcm) and says its not locked. So not sure if its locked, if I'm understanding this thread then the pcm is NOT locked as tuner advised me.
