Just tune some friends cars...their credits will unlock the 2002 model year for you.

It's the same thing I said earlier. Tune an 01-02 car and just use that file in yours.

Question

I understand the concept of getting the file from an 01 or 02, however I cannot tune one of those years because I am only licensed for 00 fbody cars. Also, if I was able to find someone's car to tune, they wouldn't have hptuners so I don't know how their credits would "unlock the 2002 model year for me".

Another idea.... Suppose I started with a new(to me) hptuners... I can get a 2002 ecm from the junkyard from an 02 tahoe. Doesn't this have the same os as the 02 fbody?(12212156) If I can just drop my configurations on to that ecm, it would save a couple credits and I could sell my 00 ecm to cover the cost of the 02 tahoe ecm. It would use 2 credits for the 02 ecm and 2 for the rtt os. Correct? Any reason to get the f-body ecm over the tahoe? They have the same service # and os # as far as I can tell.

1. Find someone with an 01-02 needing tuning assistance.
2. offer said assistance and charge them at least the $100 that it costs to license their car (2credits)
3. Now use this file to flash to the PCM that you already have a license for.

Now you have an 01-02 and are one step closer to unlocking the year/model unlimited VIN since each license counts toward it as partial credits.

I'm sure it's different depending on location, but how does it affect OBDII emission inspections having a different VIN in the PCM as the car.

Yeah that can be a deal breaker in many places. Like you said Jon, I'm sure he would be fine with his own year, was just pointing out to be able to take max advantage of things...

Still that's not to say that he can't use the newer OS and switch back for inspection time.

I would try to work out what I had and if someone comes along needing a tune with a newer car then try it.

And, uh, John? It's Jon.

I was all worried about the VIN issue...but I've been thinking about trying to get my car inspected with the wrong VIN in it anyways...it's a VIN from a newer car, so I don't think they'll care.

Post up the results of that inspection and your location if you do go that route.

I never thought of this but I run the 2000 system in my car and that damn secondary VE table pisses me off like no other since I always run open loop. I tuned a 2001 408 Camaro so it never really clicked until someone mentioned I could load his newer operating system into mine. Do I need to do anything regarding the Vin#?

If you're using HPTuners there is nothing you can do about the VIN since it has to match the OS. I believe EFILive lets you change it to whatever you want.
