Question about 98' ECU
So I have heard that the ECU's in the 98' LS1 cars are harder to tune and are also not compatible with a lot of tuners. I have also heard of people swapping out ECU to 99'+ LS1 model ECU. So, I was wondering why the ECU is harder to tune since it is an OBDII car and has the same motor as the 99'+ models? Also what is all involved in swapping out to a 99'+ ECU if that is what needs to be done? Thanks ahead of time!

They say its harder to tune because with HP Tuners the table resolutions are lower, and IIRC there are some options missing in the '98's. For the swap, I was told you need to repin 1 or 2 wires in the connector. Ive never heard that the '98's werent compatible with a lot of tuners tho. I've seen tuners that have the '98 listed seperatly from the '99-'02 though.

I have been looking for a hand held tuner to use for now before i get the car dyno tuned in a few years after a stall convertor, LT's, trans build and intake, but that wont be for probaly a year and a half to two years. If you know of a good hand held please let me know!
