Trans Tuning
How do you guys tune your trans? Do you allow lockup in 3rd? If so, what RPM to you let it go in? What RPM do you let it go into OD? Do you set it to go into lockup a couple MPH after it shifts?
Here's why I ask. I've got the idea that I don't want lockup at all in 3rd, or if I do, I don't ever want it until 40MPH. The only reason I'd want it in 3rd, is to help with mileage. I also don't want OD until 55 MPH. I also don't like to see it go into lockup at the same time as it shifts into 3rd or OD. The RPM drop is too great and does not make for smooth operation. Are these ideas reasonable?

I turned off 3rd gear lockup. I spent a lot of time tweaking
OD lockup vs TPS to where it "felt right" across the range.
And lockup follows upshift pretty much, 2 MPH later.
The part throttle shift tables are where you'll find a lot of
drivability / around-town performance improvement.
This zip file is an Excel sheet for settings I liked, at the time.
Only changes since were for gears & new converter.

I have done what you describe in the tuning of many cars - depends on things such as the cam and stall convertor as to where it "feels" right... I have also tuned the trans in my truck too. I've changed the lockup, unlock, upshift and downshift points to keep the RPMs up a bit over stock - in a heavy truck with bigger than stock tires, it actually improved my around town mileage...
