Default what do i have to do to change my pcm from 98 to 99 or newer

i have a 88 trans am with a ls1 swap. it has a modified 98 harness and computer. will the newer computers 99-02 bolt directly in place of my 98 computer. are there any benefits of installing a newer year computer? i wanted to buy a diablosport predator, but it only say it will work with 99-02. has any one used a predator on a 98 computer? any help grreately appreciated

You will have to repin the harness to run the 411 ECM. I'll be doing this tomorrow lol.

It took me about 4 hours to do it. It took me 2 hours to repin it back to the 98. If nobody posts the link, I'll find it later. Someone has created a perfect step by step instruction on how to do it.

I have done this, it isnt that hard, basicly label each wire by circuit number, then pull the wires out, and repin it based on the 99+ circuit layout.

Cool 28 can you point me in the right direction to get the pinouts to swap the 98 to go with the 411 PCM. Thanks

The 98 PCM are a bitch to tune. Its easier to tune the 411 PCM's so thats what im doin with my 98 harness so i can use a 411 PCM.

I was looking into doing this for my 98 Z because I wanted a diablosport tuner. My dad has a 99 T/A he got the diablo and he claims it gave him 15hp at least. I drove his car and it felt no different then my camaro. I think he wasted 280dollars and its in his head. I don't really believe in hand held tuners. I rather have mine dyno tuned. And that's what I'm gonna do. I think it would be cheaper then buying a new pcm and the diablo then it would to just take it to a performance shop for a nice tune. That's just me though

This is completely not true. I tuned my own '98 with HP tuners. With the exception of having a primary and secondary VE table, it's almost like every other PCM out there.

Are you saying that the 98' PCM'sprimary and secondary VE tables are easy to tune as a 411 PCM? I have no experience with tuning this is just what i have read and been told.

99 and up you can do custom operating system, which you can control nitrous and can even do 2 or maybe even 3 bar maps?? I could be wrong on the 3 bar maps(i am no turbo guy)

also the 99's have a lot more idle tuning that can be done for when its time for the monster camshafts.

I am running a stock 99 computer and harness in my 98 t56 race car.

http://www.chipsbyal.com/convert98/Convert98a.doc

That's what I used to do mine. Have to do a crank relearn and vats if you have it afterwords. Plus need a 02 program for a 98. Can go to Holdencrazy for a file

These are the biggies right here. To add to it, the trans tunes in the 99 and up have more parameters (for the auto guys, does nothing for the M6 crowd)

The timing tables go to 1.2 grams vs only 1 gram in the 98s.

FWIW, one of the tricks I use on the 98s is to use the 2 bar SD COS when tuning a big cam car in speed density. Just keep the 1 bar sensor, and change the linear and offset to the 1 bar parameters, and just use 1/2 the table. That way you get the resolution of the bigger VE table (don't have to use the secondary VE).
