Default Help me make a tuning decision with my 98 TA!?

Here's my situation: I have a 98 T/A with a bolt ons, stall tune from PCMforless. I am about to do a cam swap and need to retune. A reflash is like $100.

I also have access to my cousins efilive account and could either attempt to tune it myself or have pcmforless email me their tune and then load their tune with the efilive account.

At first I wanted PCMFORLESS to just email me their tune, but then after I talked to the guy there he said I would most likely fry my PCM if I went that route. Is that a common problem?

So my question is, what should I do? Is tuning for a cam swap difficult? (cam is 224TR 112 lsa .581 lift comp cams) And if not, would I still have the same problem of frying the PCM if I attempted to do that?

So basically I could send my PCM off and have them retune it and be out a car for a few days unless I want to pay for next day shipping either way. (I have a street bike I can ride, but thats weather dependent)

Have them email me the tune and I load it myself and run the alleged risk of frying the PCM

Tune it myself for free since I have an EFIlife account I can use with credits.

What should I do?

How would you "fry" your PCM buy uploading a email tune from them? Now I understand something awful to the engine if they emailed you a tune with some crazy off the wall parameters

Apparently 98 pcms are very sensitive and if there is a voltage drop during the reflash they end up frying...

no credits required for a '98 w\EFI live

all pcms could be FUBAR with a failed flash.

it sounds like he was meaning to say it's not on him if you screw it up.

Thanks, he said the last three 98's that tried it on their own had failed flashed and fried their computers and that there are basically no 98 pcms left and that I would be SOL if mine went

If you're willing to take the time to learn how to tune yourself; I would go that route. FWIW - I've reflashed the PCM on my 98 TA countless times without a problem.

I agree must be something wrong with his interface or he is not doing something right. I have also flashed many 98s and my 97 vette "same pcm"

I would greatly appreciate that! Do I need a wideband?

yes if you want to tune wide open throttle. Without a wideband all that can be tuned for fueling are the idle and trims

I always use just a stand alone wideband in my cars. I use the AEM wideband. I buy mine on ebay for like 160 bucks or so. they seem to be reliable for me.

I use the aem in all the cars I've helped people with. Easy power and ground hook up
