Default Looking for a "basic" scanner

I am looking for a "basic" scanner for my sons 99 Z28. I have no desire to do any real tuning with it, just looking for something to read basic codes and show simple values like TPS IAC and MAF. I would prefer something that runs on a Windows 7 laptop via USB. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out our VCM Scanner std package that we offer here http://www.hptuners.com/order.php does everything you'd want on multiple vehicle types.

how much do you want to spend? if you have an android phone you can get a cheap ($15-$20) ELM327 bluetooth obd2 adapter and download torquepro for around $6. it will read almost all pcm codes as well as reset dtcs.

i have hptuners also that lets me tune and rewrite the operating system. ALOT more money.

also, just ordered the scanXL pro software/hardware for around $350 to see if it will let me get to the abs stuff that virtually all other non TECH2 scanners can't do.

for high end get a used tech2 for $1500+

If you want all the vehicle modules then look at AutoEnginuity (with GM Enhanced option, which includes bidir ability).

Yes, I have it and used it to cycle the ABS solenoids, and to test the 4L60E solenoids, to test the IACV on the throttle body.

But be warned, AE want $50 every year to update if you want to scan new model vehicles, if you scan older vehicles you don't have to update.

have you ever tried monitoring the individual wheel speeds via the abs system? i have a 4ch abs that has one bad sensor (LR) that i want to monitor.

wish i had stumbled across that program earlier. oh well, maybe the scanxl will work. if not at least others reading this will know that info.

just an update on scanxl setup.

ABS scanning is still NOT working properly. initially none of the pids for abs showed up for my 2001 year. however tech support at palmer performance engineering (PPE) suggested trying a different year. when i tried both a 2000 and 2002 the abs pids did ALL show up. unfortunately, only the LF and RR were active and the other 2 were inactive. PPE support has determined their software has a bug and is working on a fix. i'll keep ya in the loop. so half way there. if it works i think it is a pretty darn good deal to be able to get the abs stuff for a total of 350.

another update on scanxl pro.

the ppe tech support guy had me change a setting that allowed the software to interface more accurately with the abs module. as a result i can now see all the gm enhanced abs pids. yippee. i just got done logging my 4 wheel speed sensors to determine the problem with the 4ch system. hopefully they will get the bidirectional functions implemented soon also.

nevertheless, if you are wanting to do abs stuff i can now recommend this as an effective solution, and for the TOTAL cost of around $350 it is priced so the average guy can afford it (vs a tech2).
