Default HP Tuner users please nudge a novice

I have a well tuned car using Edit. I wanted to buy Edit for myself to keep my street tune current. After research it seems HP Tuner is better bang for the buck.
I never used either and do not understand all the abbreviations.
I am smart enough to cautiously learn.
Any new tuners please advise your story.
Heads/cam cars with A4 most welcome and results from tunes appreciated!!

I'll want to keep the basic tune as it is since my motor runs sweet
I really want to play with torque management, converter lock up, shift points and stuff.
Then I'll get into the more intricate tuning.

Can I save my Edit tune with the HP and just start changes with the trans settings and flash them in without disturbing my engine parameters?

yup you can read your PCM w/HP Tuners, save that bin as a backup , then make any changes you want... since you're using that as a base tune, any changes you make will be the only changes made to the PCM ... so if you don't touch the engine stuff no changes will be made to the engine stuff

that's a sweet start
And are the changes to torque management, shift points, lock up etc. relatively easy to navigate? any "help" screens to prevent a foolish entry?
thank you!

Yup it's pretty simple... the help file they include w/the software explains alot of the tables pretty well..

they have more info up on their Site under FAQ
http://www.hptuners.com/products-edit.html has some screen shots

I used LS1 Edit for 2 years... once I got HP Tuners I learned some new things just reading through their help file

There's really nothing to prevent "foolish entries" however, if you take it slowly you shouldn't mess anything up since it sounds like you're only going to be working w/the trans settings at first you should be fine... then when you start working w/the engine settings anything you would wanna know is in this section

last question
laptop requirements
on the site it says
300mhz for the scanning, 64mb RAM and 16 mg free space.
Is this bare minimum or will a laptop of 300 mhz and say 128 mg RAM do the job nicely?

thanks much!

do you carry extra batteries, have a 12v/110 plug adapter or a cig lighter powered battery charger to use the laptop on the road?

i just use a DC to AC inverter... (cheap one i picked up at Best Buy) my battery lasts about 25 mins when charged but I never shut it down properly so it's always dead

The Inverter hasn't let me down yet (well w/LS1 Edit it would take so long to read the PCM that my car wouldn't start after a 20 minute read though my battery sux too ... 10 mins w/the doors open and it's dead)

I have been using a 266MHz Thinkpad (w/ 288MB
RAM though) without any issues. It was pretty
doggy with only 32MB.... not the software's fault,
though; even booting Windoze took 5 minutes
when the thing had to thrash VM all the time.

Most of the fields have "sanity limit" checks that
will not let you put in crazy entries (though stupid
is still allowed). Out-of-bounds entries are clipped
back to min or max at table update / save time.

Minimum Requirements:
150 mhz PC or Laptop (Flash and Editor)
300 mhz PC or Laptop (Recommended for Scanner)
64 MB of RAM
16 MB of Disk Space
Native Serial Port or PCMCIA serial adapter

I know for sure it works on windows xp and windows 2000 ... not sure about 98 or 95 though... (i would imagine it'd work but have no first hand experience using it on either of those antiquated OS's hehehe)

Oh and it doesn't work in linux

I used the first release on a Toshiba 100MHz, Win98
machine. It wasn't fast enough to stay with the PCM
read in high speed mode and would drop logger data
if you had anything displayed. But it ran on Win98.
I had to go to 2000 on my 266 laptop because of
some hardware issues there, that I needed the more
robust Win2K installer (not the OS itself) in order to
set it up. Otherwise I'd be running the lighter-footprint
Win98 still.

Definitely want a hardware 9-pin serial port if you can
get it. Most sub-500MHz machines will sport one, they
were from a time when USB was still not thought to be
"universal".
