Bought a 98 Camaro SS seeking advice on PCM options.
You'd think I'd learn after the first time lol. I also have a 97 C5 that I ended up doing a 411 pcm swap into. Not nearly the scary monster it is made out to be.
This Camaro has original LS1 SBE with CNC ported 243 heads, SS2 cam and Speed Engineering long tubes. Also Speed Engineering airbox. 6s peed trans.
It's had some partial tuning done to the original PCM. It starts, and idles for the most part and drives. It doesn't go into power enrichment.
It has EGR code, rear O2 right side only Code, and AC lower pressure code which is because the compressor is out of it.
The car came with an AEM UEGO wideband and it appears to be working correctly. I bought the same adapters to hook up to the serial data so I can USB datalog into HP tuners scanner that I am using on the C5
When we did the little third gear squirt to check for power enrichment it decided it didn't want to idle after that. Stalled and restarted with the key. Then for the next ten minutes of getting the car back to the house you had to three foot drive the car to keep it from stalling. Then out of nowhere it decided to try idling again on it's own about 3 blocks from the house.
The advice part of this deal. Do I spend the hundo on credits to try and tune the atari 2600 PCM? Or do I scare up a 411pcm and save the credits for that.
Third option is save up and buy the basic Terminator X but I loathe the idea of two PCMs on one car and trying to make the gauges work lol. But it is an option.
I am going to try and get a datalog this morning to try and see what is going on with the current tune.
The car is pretty nice for being 25 years old and 160k miles. 2 owner car. Lived in the desert all of or nearly all its life.
So after driving the car around a bit more today we might possibly just leave this PCM in the car for now. No problems with the idle today.
One thing we found is the catch can that was on there was plumbed completely wrong and not even doing anything. There was also no PCV valve. The suction port on the intake was capped off and the outlet of the catch can was going to the fresh air port on the TB. Got that all straightened out. Car is driving well and the trims don't look terrible to my novice trained eyes.
I should have the wideband datalogging cable made middle of the week.
I also didn't know you could save a copy of the tune off the car without using credits.
So if any of you fine gentlemen or women would like to have a peek at the tune in this car and couple data logs I'd be very appreciative. One cold start log and one 10 minute drive log.
Couple things to note that I haven't looked into. The MAP is in PSI instead of KPA and the oil pressure shows as a negative number in the scanner but appears to work on the gauge.
Since you have already done a 97/98 PCM swap to a "411" once, I would suggest it again, especially if/when you decide to update the tune. Seems a waste to spend $100 on the credits for a '98 PCM.
Before I switched to the Holley Dominator, I also swapped from a '98 PCM to a 411, and was glad I did.
A long time ago I read on the Internet (so it must be TRUE) that the 411 has a more powerful processor than the 98 PCM and can therefore make more precise calculations under rapidly changing conditions.
Perhaps that is false, but I forgot what the other advantages are.
Had a quick look.
The 98 ecu is pretty slow. I can see that in the O2 switching. But it's all working.
I downloaded a stock 98 tune file to compare. It has been messed with.
It's running blended maf/speed density. The VE table was messed with around idle. But the MAF wasn't. Which really doesn't work. Need to tune both. Or just use the MAF and tune it.
They messed with a variety of things, none make much sense to me given the mild combo. So it simply needs to be tuned. Or retuned.
As far as not going into PE, I didn't see any full throttle or high enough throttle/rpm to tell it to go into PE.
Camaro's don't give you oil pressure in the data stream. Just to the gauge. The ecu is capable, they just didn't wire it to the ecu. It can be added if you swap to the P01, I've done it.
The base tune in my Nova is a 99 Camaro because that the ecu I started out with.
Been running a stock 98 PCM for over a decade up to the 700whp range and great drivability. Don't go speed density on a 98. Otherwise, just need a good tuner.
Thanks for all the replies and great insight from all of you.
Currently I think we are going to move forward with tuning the 98 PCM for now. Will be self tuning hopefully.
Thanks for looking at the tune Ron. After you typed that I realized we didn't log the short wide open pull. I'll do it again once I have the cable made for logging the wideband.
Totally makes sense that the MAF is fighting the ve table.
I also forgot to mention and it also makes sense now that when the last owner put the 243 heads on he also put in this giant texas speed donkey dick cam that barely idled and they couldn't even drive it the thing was so chuggy. So they took that out and put in the sloppy 2 cam. So some of the mess in the tune could be leftovers from that.
Good to know on the oil pressure. I'll take that out of the channel list haha.
Personally, I'd want that thing out of there. If for no other reason than to get a 2002 tune file in there with a single VE table instead of the stupid Primary Secondary tables.
That's just me though.
The 0411 is twice as fast as the 98 stocker, and also available. When I tried to replace my 98 PCM back in 2016, there were basically none left out there on any of the usual sites. The two times I found them, and bought them, were also followed by two phone calls saying that they didn’t actually have one, or that it failed the bench test.
My 98 PCM wasn’t broken, but it also had a tough enough time trying to keep up with a 427 LS3. So I did the swap. Made a huge difference. It also meant I could delete the relay to me 4L80 and run it normal.
Alright enough persuasion lol. We're going to go to Pick N Pull on Saturday and try and not only get one 411PCM but hopefully two of them. Also fixing to start a LS swapped Ford Ranger project!
Shitty part is the F body bracket cost more than the PCM lol.
