98 to 99+ ecu Hi its been a long time since ive been here. Im in the process of upgrading my ecu because the 98 bricked and everyone is trying to rip us off with the 98 ecus. Anyway i am going to buy the ecu new at my local auto parts store but they ask for vin, year of car etc. can i use my 98 trans am vin or do i have to get a 99+ vin?
It depends, if they can order you a newer PCM and put your VIN number in it, that will work.
However, if they are ordering you a PCM soley based off the VIN, you will need to use a a 99+ VIN,.
Can you not find one at a local salvage yard or in the for sale section on here?

EFI live will let you put a 98 vin in a 99-02 PCM
HPTuners won’t let you create the mismatch, but will let you tune it.
I have a spare 98 pcm for an auto trans car. Stock file and it does function as I was able to read it with HPT.

Switching to a 99 and up pcm will require pcm tuning. I switched to a 99 and up tank and had to swap things around in my tune and adjust a table to get the gauge pretty accurate. My Speedo worked fine when done

Re did my wiring luckily i bought an extra set of connectors from my local recyling yard, so it made the rewiring easy. I had 2 wires crossed and the ecu i bought was for a manual so i had to segment swap from a same year car with an auto. Whoch i had known before i bought credits for my 00 ecu because when you do the segment swap it will require that you buy credits again.

Ive driven the car for 3 days now and just today it stopped charging the battery. Like wth, with as much driving as i did i would have expected the battery to die sooner but it just today started showing low and barely made it back home.
If you start with an auto, it has all the needed programming, so you just turn that off for a manual. If you start with a manual, it may not necessarily have everything to just switch to auto. He started with a manual file. Either way, it is just easier to swap a segment than to make all the changes by hand, although I would have done so with freeware instead of buying more HPT credits.

Its solved everything is working as it should, alternator wire was barely grabbing and had a SPEAKER o ring for the main current 🤦♂️. Got a bronze one for batteries crimped and soldered the wire in and man does it charge fast now.
