I agree with the above statements. I'm running stock heads and MS4 cam. I run 26* at wot. Tried up to 29* and showed no knock while scanning....but lost up to 5hp at 29*. Tuned it back to 26* and gained the 5hp right back.

28* with the stock cam/full bolt ons. My new tune for the cam has 30* I believe so we'll see how that goes on the dyno.

Can't seem to break 24 without knock retard and that's even with going with higher compression heads.

I believe higher CR leads to denser charge, which itself requires less spark advance to produce maximum power. And vice versa, lower CR should need more advance.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong

I believe you're right, but I was at 24 * even with my stock heads. On the dyno Sunday I saw three degrees of knock retard when going to 26 degrees...looks like I'll stick with 24.

I was running 28 to 30 before the 427. I am getting audible spark knock under load at that level, so I am now down to 26 dgrees, and may lower it just a little more.

Somewhat yes, but there's more to it. Lets look at the fastest (or was recently the fastest street car ever) street car, the C5 Z06 and it's stock 24°of timing. The car was able to run 11.x ¼mile times bone stock. Why is this with such seemingly low timing? Well for the most part it was the combo of better flowing/engineered heads and cam package and peak power was attained at a mere 24°. So, you don't have to have gobs of timing to have some nice power, it all depends on your combo. Still, tuning for KR is certainly not the way to tune as many think. My current combo, 408, runs the best numbers with 26°. My record runs in the stock Z06 were running the stock 24° of timing.

The whole deal with timing is to slowly advance it (1* increments) until you hear/pick up knock. Then start retarding it until it goes away. We have a local guy that has these headphones/box that he plugs into the car and lets him listen for knock. It's a pretty nice tool to have. Each car is different, so don't be suprised that everyone has thier own opinions on this.

You must not have read through the posts. That is the absolute wrong way to set timing, totally wrong. That guy with the box, if this is where your getting your information, is very foolish and knows nothing about tuning or mechanics. In my web I have an intro paragraph that explains why we need to pull timing when running nitrous, and will shed light on why your way is not correct. Some stating their WOT timing are probably looking at their n/a timing as the original poster did not specify n/a or sprayed. N/A or sprayed timing, neither is set according to your statements. This is one of those misconceptions that won't go away.

I was talking about a motor tune. If you don't have acces to a dyno on a regular basis how are you supposed to tune? According to you I should never trust the knock sensors to pick up knock. Just set it at 22* and forget it? I hardly think that's the answer. There are alot of methods out there, and I'm glad yours are the best. I guess my tune is junk and the car should never go down the track again.

Yea, there are a lot of methods out there, and forgive me, but I like to use the ones that are correct. Reading your plugs for your indicated timing mark is the way to do it (if you don't have access to a dyno), and including strip tuning you'll be able to tune in for max power. Even with a dyno and knowing max power, reading of the plugs are still benificial, with actual track time to back up dyno. Setting it to KR and then backing off till it goes away tells you what? We want volumetric efficancy and we won't be getting that with guessing about the timing and/or peak timing to be used. To many think the most timing is the way to go, not true, and actually a little dangerous if any little issue crops up, you could go instantly to detonation, not good spraying or not. If your forced to use your method, i would go back further than just till knock goes away, just for added piece of mind in the safety department.

Robert, I didn't say anything about going until the PCM picks up knock. That guys box will pick up the faintest knock present in the motor. Back it off, and use that timing as your MAX timing available. That doesn't mean that that makes the most power, it's the ceiling. I read plugs, but to be honest I really only do it during nitrous tuning. I completely agree that more is not necessarily better but, like you and I both know, every car is different

Yeah I've tried to go to 25 and 26 degrees of timing and saw absolutely no power difference and even a little knock at 26. The car is happily at 24 degrees again.

combustion chamber and head design also have a bearing on timing advance. I know L92's love the timing, 30-32 is where most like it, all else being ok as far as fuel and what not.

So it looks like 28* is where the majority sit this however could be misleading because this doesn't take into account CR or cam profiles.
Mine runs 28* mostly until 6k then ramps to 30.5 and it runs beautifully.

Every motor is different and should be treated as such I think.

cheers

I have no idea how you guys run so much timing. Both GTO's I have tuned get knock after 26 degrees.
