Quick question?
98s are the oddball year... but AFAIK the 99-02 PCMs are similar enough to accept any OS and can be swapped around...
Windy City on this site has a 2002 and I believe a 2000 PCM that he used to swap back and forth (before he got HPT) on his 02 car... 99s should work fine as well..
Just keep in mind that an 02 PCM will have the 02 timing/fuel setup... 02 car setup for 28lb injectors, smaller cam... 99 setup for 26lb injectors and bigger cam ... so it may not run perfect outta the box...
You could swap PCMs then have the PCM flashed by a dealer (or anyone w/a full HPT tuner package) to your year also ... regardless what year the PCM came in (so long as it's 99-02 f-body)

Is it a direct switch?
I suggest you use a stop watch for doing the PCM/BCM relearn if your doing it manually.
If you have a Ease V2.5 to V 3.5 version PCM scanner use the bi directional mode to do the CASE relearn.
Being the '99 used a 75 mm MAF and newer models from '01 uses the 85 mm MAF you need to make sure your tuning for the MAF you decide to use and adjust for injector size used.
Also do not forget about the EGR function if its a F body where 99 used one and '02 does not.
Now look at a '02 MAF table it starts at 750 Hz since the 85 mm MAF has a wider output frequency then the older 75 mm MAF.
but the "meat" is the same and so are the MAFs -
my '02 had the same 75mm "Oreo" MAF as the rest
of the F-bodies. The 'Vettes got upsized, but not
the Camaros and Firebirds.
what is since the MAF table for a '01 supports freq less then 1500 Hz and more then 11,500 then if he wishes to use a 85 mm MAF he can do so where he could not if he maintained his older MAF tables.
Its not worth it to me to go with a 02 flash and not make use of what he has over the older '99 flash tables.
Do not forget the adaptive strategy used in the '02 is functioning differently then the A.S in his '99
Is it worth the trouble?
