Default Problems logging on with HPTuners

Hey guys,
I can't log onto my car with my HPTuners cable. It keeps saying no port found??? Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I have power at the cars diagnostic port and I'm using the serial/USB adapter that was specified by the guys at HPTuners, my laptop doesn't have a serial port, only a monitor port. I have used the program before and it's awesome but now it's not worth a **** to me. I changed absolutely NOTHING between the time I used it last and now. Any help would be VERY appreciated. Thanks,
Scott

Also check to make sure there's power to the cigarette lighters... if no power there, then no power at OBDII port ... so could be blown fuse (I've had this happen to me before due to some accesories i run outta my cig lighters)

I will give this a try, I've also verified the power at the OBDII connection by way of test light and at the ciggarette lighter by way of Passport X50
Thanks for the help.

I would check on the Windoze side, what port the USB
serial connector is being assigned and what if any
pre-figured-out setting is there from your previous
install. People had problems in the early going with
HPTuners stopping the search at some lower-order
port numbers (COM1, COM2, ...) but the USB converters
will go and put crazy COM17 numbers up. Try and force
COM1 (or whatever doesn't conflict with built-in modem,
ethernet, etc. serial resources) and then see whether
there is any proper autodetect; don't know if you can
force HPTuners to use a fixed COM address but if so
maybe you can determine the COMxx and sync that up.

Very good information, I'll try to figure it out Jimmy Blue. Thank you very much!

Any luck with this? My laptop stopped talking to my ALDL port while logging this evening. Now autotap, ls1-edit, nor hptuners will connect.

Fuses are OK, cig lighters are OK, shorting pins 2-3 together on serial port allows me to echo characters to the screen.

If you get a "no port found" error, then the software never even gets to the point to check the cable. It is unable to find an open com port to check if the cable exists.

If you have no port found, the issue is in windows or computer hardware.

I occassionally get connection issues when I have my scanner tool connected and go to flash. I have to disconnect the scanner first. Although this sounds like it may not help you.

Well, it's working again. What changed between last night and now?

1. Before work, still could not connect to VCM with HPT. I did not retry the other cables this morning, but the others did not work last night.

2. About 7 hours later, we put a Tech2 on it and found no problem.

3. Loaded HPT on another laptop and it connects fine in both the scanner & flash.

4. Immediately closed both flash & scanner. Connected cable to original laptop without making any OS port changes.

5. Works fine again.

WTF? ???

with some USB adapters they do not detect correctly if there is something plugged in when you insert them into the USB port. Another thing to check if you have multiple USB ports and some primitive drivers will allocate a different com port depending on which USB port you connect to...

In my case, I'm not using any USB cables, only DB9.

Jim,

I'm still having problems with mine. Today I was only able to get a 5 minute log before it disconnected...."Unable to find cable".

I'm worried about this happening in the middle of a VCM write.

Yeah, I never had the problem with AutoTap nor LS1-Edit. Either somethings getting tired or I think there's a problem. Reviewing their old release notes indicates they tried to make a fix for disconnections in the past.

I'm having better luck today. I found a troubleshooting section in the manual with recommendations for setting up the COM port. Also I changed the startup sequence:

Power on the PC without attaching the cable to the PCM port.
Turn on the ignition and wait >10 seconds.
Plug in the PCM connector.
Open the scanner and have at it!

This worked without incident for three logs today. My fingers are crossed.

Good luck!

I'm not sure if setting up the port per the Help Manual, or plugging in the connector after I turn the ignition on fixed the problem, but it worked again for me today.

Whatever works!
