Default Ported MAFH, bad for my car?

what are the chances of a home ported maf causing damage to my car from running to lean? my car throws codes p0171 & p0174(bank1&2 lean)
my SES light doesent stay on all the time some times it will go away for a week or so and then sometimes its on every other day. i know that having a ported maf tricks the ECU into leaning things out do to the unmetered air. but should it be triggering trouble codes? sometimes my exhaust smells like rotten eggs.
any input would be greatly appreciated

It tricks the car but you may not actually end up any
leaner than before, due to fuel trim learning. Or, just
variably so, depending on what trim cell you stepped
off from. It's just a crappy way to tune. Maybe knock
retard will keep on saving you from engine damage
but if it were me, I'd find a better way.

The ends off a junkyard MAF ought to set you back
next to nothing.

thanks for the advise, but i figured it wouldnt be something that the stock ECU cant handle as it takes readings from both maf and o2's and balances between, i also have very bad exhaust leaks at my catback maybe, maybe when it pulls cold air in through the holes and causes that poping noise the air throws off the readings of the o2's saying there is to much oxygen. keep em' commin guys i need ideas.

I installed a GMS MAF and I'm getting the same two codes as well. I was thinking it was maybe an air leak from the air lid to the MAF, because the connection is very loose due to the thinner plastic on the GMS MAF. I dont know for sure, but input would help.

a leak before the sensor does not matter because it is metered none the less.
.though it never ever threw a code till home ported maf. but i will have to say, my buddy who did it did a pretty descent job so i dont see why it would cause THAT much of a problem the ecu cant 'adjust'

How far ported is it? Between that and your lid, you are pretty screwed. You are probably maxing out your trims. Throw your stock air lid back on for now and reset your PCM. If you want to keep that ported MAF and your lid you will probably need a tune to put your trims within a reasonable range for the PCM to compensate.
