temp gauge goes crazy, car chugs, ??
i broke the temp sensor switch when pulling a spark plug. so i replaced it w/ an autozone one after it started acting up. I drove 20 miles to work today got there and there was no pressure built up in radiator, i could pull the cap right off. but yesterday it overheated and started spewing out after i turned it off.
The temp gauge will go up to normal, then drop to zero, idle goes up then car chuggs a few times then the temp goes back up to normal. keeps doing it. drive a mile and its fine, then all of a sudden its doing it again.
HP tuners says the temp is at -34 and code - temp sensor high voltage. also it wouldnt start after work today, i had to hold the gas pedal down and it slowly started.
Any ideas anyone?
thanks.

Fix/replace the temp sender and/or wiring ?
When the gauge/scan tools read correctly the sensor is working... If it's reading incorrect values it will wreak havoc.
Lots of idle RPM/fueling/etc functions are based off coolant temp...

i was driving around w/ HPtuner hooked up, temp would all of a sudden dive to 150 car started acting up. everything else is fine. I wonder if the autozone sensor is junk?
i had to drive to the next city to get it. no one around here carrys them. i'll try and find another one.
thanks for the info.

i fixed it. the plug in end that connects onto the sensor had the metal things inside to loose. i bent them back so the put tension on the connector. Its been a problem for awhile. if i hadnt broken the sensor i couldnt have seen how loose it fit in there. runs better and idles smoother than it ever has in the year and a half i owned the car.
the great mystery finally solved.
