Default Cam guys: what is your normal change in idle speed per set idle speed?

ok so my idle is set at 850 rpms and my idle will bounce around about 80 rpms but up to 110 at times total so about +/- 40-55 rpm. just wanting to see if im doing ok or its changing too much. i think stock was 60 rpm change, +/- 30

depending on the cam, could be smooth as hell or rough as hell. My TSP 231/237 112* swings about the same as your cam, a little more actually, +/- 85 to 100

I have my idle set to 850rpm 133* and above. I took 531 lines of the car idling and the results were:

Average 860 rpm
Max 929 rpm
Min 794 rpm
Range 135 rpm

Mine seems to idle very smoothly and the needle is rock solid.

blacker what cam you have? mine goes about like this from the log i just looked at

low:807
high: 904
average: 851

my idle is set at 850 so it gets the average pretty good

what do you guys think about setting the idle overspeed timing change to be less, wonder if it would help with the swings of the rpm? im going to try tomorrow with it slightly lower and check it out. ori may just get my car set up how i want it and then go adjust that to get the best idle rpm ranges.

I have a Futral 228/228 Cam. I lowered the timing in the base timing tables to 21* (0-1200 rpm and 0.08-0.32 g/cyl)

yeah i just set mine at 21, it was 23 then 22 and it feels good. ill try 20 and if it doesnt get better ill put it back to 22 or 21. im going to experiment with this idle overspeed spark reduction as well.

Interesting thread.

I have my idle set at 825, averages 823, min 748, max 900

I was told that my cam would have to idle at 975 by a professional tuner.

yeah ived tuned a professionally tuned car that was set to 975 to 1025 and i got it running 850 lol looks like we are more professional then they are. my ultimate goal is to get an average of no more than about 35-40 over and under the settings of idle speed. my idle hits its targe right on the nose just about every idle log ido so i figure thats half the battle. thinking the overspeed settings have a lot to do with it so ill check into that. and ideas you guys may have to try let me knwo and i will.or anything you have tried that worked keeping it steady. once i get the fuel and spark settled the best then ill mess with the correction tables to stabilize it. i just think it would be cool to compair, at least i know where im at now isnt moving way too much. i hear a stumble and i want it gone lol.

keep the numebrs comming

Interesting about the overspeed adjustment. I might have to play around with it as well.

I wouldn't claim to be anything more than a professional tweaker. I just really like taking **** apart and putting it back together again - with no leftover parts.

ok well after adjusting some things i start out at 131 rpm error

went down to 121

now im at 103 with average rpm 0.01 higher than my set idle. so its working out. i tried to adjust proportional fueling to smooth out the o2s some i will see if that helped tomorrow
