Default High idle on 99 ss camaro..Help Please.

I just purchased a 99 camaro ss and noticed it was idling a bit high. It doesnt sound bad but the tac is reading 1100-1400. 1400rpms when cold and 1100-1200 rpms after its been driven for a 2 hr trip. It is completely bone stock except for the k&n filter. I have tried to adjust the bump stop on the trottle body but had no luck. Any ideas? I refuse to take my car to any repair place because they all suck around here. All thoughts upon the subject are welcome and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It more than likely has a vacuum leak. The two places that I would check first would be the pvc hose and also the egr where it goes into the manifold.

Vacuum leak like he said, or the throttlebody has been drilled, or the iac motor is stuck open.

Ok time to open up a whole can of worms. Sorry about this guys. The trottle body has been drilled. I taped it up and it runs rough. Why would the previous owner drill the tb? and why would it run rough after plugged? Can i purchase just a butterfly anywhere to return it to stock?
Thanks
Jeff

All throttlebodies have a hole in them. It's just a matter of if it's been drilled bigger than the stock hole, but I forget what size the stock hole is.

How do i check for a vacuum leak? Im mechanically inclined so if you can halfway explain it, im sure i can do it. Just not sure if it required any pressure gauges, specail tools, or any EASY tricks of the trade to it.
Thanks,
Jeff

you taped it up? lol like stated your tb should have a hole drilled in it...also consider how far the stock tach is off at idle...some people see a 200 rpm difference from logged to actual. M6's idle at 800 rpms stock when warm & ~1000 when cold so being at 1100 or 1200 depending on if hot or cold isnt out of the realm of possibilty considering how far the stock tach is off. If your really that conserned scan it to see what the actual rpms & commanded idle rpm is.

spray carb cleaner around the intake...if the engine revs higher then you have a vacuum leak...i seriously doubt your car has any true issues though.

Ill try the carb cleaner deal. Thanks for the info. I was told there should not be a hole in the tb. Then i found out the truth that there is one from the factory but some people drill it out a bit. I saw the hole and thought immediatly that was what my problem was. My tach reads 1500 cold and 1200 warm. Im just trying to make everything perfect on the car. Thanks for all help.

something that shouldve been asked is your car an m6?

again get it scanned by someone local...the stock tach is too far off to get an accurate reading if your honestly that concerned.

people only drill the tb for larger cams & even then its rarely if ever needed.

Ok I tried the carb cleaner idea with no luck. No rpm rise at all. I sprayed over all vacuum lines. Notta thing happend. I even kinda misted around the whole motor in hopes of getting a slight reading but nothing. Any more suggestions?
Thanks
Jeff

I would definately try to find someone with a scan tool like hptuners or efilive in your area to take the guesswork out. And specifically i mean, find out what your throttle position is reading, what your iac position is, what your rpms actually are, and what your desired rpm speed is.

If you want something easy to check, turn your key to the on position and find out what voltage your throttle position sensor is putting out.

yeah i told him to do the same on another site where he had posted...cuz he messed with the set screw but never reset the tps sensor.

I think my tach is off. What are the chances of this? When i stalled my car out, The rpms stuck at 400-500 rpms and the car was not running. Is this normal? Any way i can tell for sure? Is it fixable if this is the case?
Thanks
Jeff

take off your TB and take out the 2 sensors, get a can of carb cleaner and spray everything and clean out any gunk in it and reasemble it put it back on the car and see if it helps

Just got done doing that thechef. Thanks for the advice but it didnt seem to phase it in any way. I think my tac is off or my iac is just screwed. Im going to do a bit more trouble shooting on it. Thanks everyone for the advice. This forum is much more helpful than the gm dealerships.
Thanks again
Jeff

you say you stalled your car out...how did that come about? Did you ever get your tps setup correctly?

I unhooked the battery cable for a few hrs. not sure if that reset my tps? I stalled my car out by letting out the clutch on a hill w/o giving it any gas.
