OK guys, don't laugh too hard OK.
I just got a laptop, but it is an antique by computer standards. I got it like DIRT cheap, so I thought I'd at least give this a shot.
What I need to know is will LS1edit work with windows 3.1??? Or is LS1Edit even a windows based app.?
Thanks in advance guys,
Taco

This was taken from carputing.com's website:
REQUIREMENTS:
LS1-edit runs on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows NT operating systems. Some customers are running LT1/LS1 edit on Windows XP and Windows 2000 systems, but we have not qualified them at this time. Minimum hardware requirements are a Pentium 133 or AMD processor with at least 32MB RAM. You will also need one RS232 serial port, and the OBD-II to RS232 converter (included with your purchase).

OK, 'nother question. Where can I get Windows95 on a floppy? I'm almost positive it has to exist, because not every computer had a CD drive back in them days!
Also, translate this for me, I think this thing will work, but I'm not sure:
MicroProcessor: Intel i486SL
Clock Freq: 33 MHz
Memory: 20288 Kb's
hard Disk: 172.0 Mb
3.5 Diskette: 2.88 Mb
LCD: 9.5 STN Mono
What does all that mean???
Thanks y'all
Taco

Is your computer a p133 or better (actually some p100's I have used have worked?) - if not give up - you can pick up a p160 for around 200 bucks.
As for win on floppy - your best bet would be to pick up a network pcmcia card and hook it up to a home computer and just access a CD drive like that

Actually, BlackBird, you're darn near right, my uncle bought 6 of them for $200, so that makes them about 30 bucks each, right???
Oh well, I guess I'll look further, I think I'll just go ahead and get me a NEW computer, and spend the money on one that I know is good, and will work.
thanks guys, you can release your laughter now!

I believe it will still work for the dos version of autotap, and if anyone had DFI software (accell, haltech, etc) it will work fine for that.
But for ls1 edit look for a pentium - p166/200's are going for good prices right now and are where I would start out looking.

I personally would run LS1_Edit on nothing less than a P166 MHz. I'm running it on a P133, and it's noticeably slow. Especially when reading out the PCM and saving the file at the end. And the more RAM, the better.
Plus, when TTS Datamaster for LS1's comes out later this spring, you'll want to be able to run it too. Man, it's going to blow the snot out of AutoTap.
I plan to sell my current machine (eventually) and replace it with at least a PII 266 MHz. You can climb in to one of those in the $400-$500 range. Seriously, buy as much laptop (used, of course, don't buy a new one ) as you can afford. I set my max at about $500-$600 - you can get one fully loaded out for that.
Also, for Win95, FORGET IT. Run at LEAST Win98 Second Edition. ALL of this software works better with Win98SE or Win2K. Forget WinME, forget Win95, and I would be hesitant about XP at this point as well.

My strongest recommendation when buying a laptop:
BUY A NAME BRAND.
IBM, Dell, Toshiba, Compaq, Sony, and to a lesser extent Gateway. Do not buy a laptop that you've never heard the brand of. Why? Well, when you need drivers, BIOS upgrades, a new CDROM, battery, or maybe more memory, you need somewhere to turn... And a lot of these fly-by-night outfits go out of business pretty quick. That can stick you in a hole real fast, and you just might have a pile of junk on your hands. With a name brand, you know where you can turn for parts & support.
As for the two laptops above, if they are a name brand, they look good to me. I *always* look to make sure it has a serial (9-pin RS232) port on the back. That way the cables have somewhere to plug in.

Both of Those are Dell, so........
I might go after a couple I found on eBay, any words of advice on buying used?
The ones I have found are from a used computer company, and all come with a 45 day warranty.
Thanks guys!

That laptop will run DOS Autotap, if it's any consolation. I run it with a 486SX.
When you go to buy a laptop, check around like Camaroholic said, sometimes repair shops will have one that suits your needs (some of these guys buy out used pc stuff from companies/non profit organizations by the pallet load).
