Need Basic Pinging Info
Dan
scenario #2 is timing too soon or timing too late for complete burning and some form of scenario #1 is also present.
Sometimes running too lean or too rich can also result in similar "ping"
[QB]Well, scenario #1 is that there is some from of byproduct of combustion somewhere in the combustion chamber that gets hot enough during the compression stroke that ignites the A/F mixture prior to the plug firing. {/QB]

In particular, I'm refering to my performance at the track (Norwalk) last night. I didn't calculate the DA but it was hot and muggy as **** out. I'm running the stock stat and Sunoco 94 octane fuel. With a hot engine and high temps, I can see how the air/fuel mixture would ignite prematurely. Isn't that detonation?
Please forgive my ignorance. I've never had to deal with any of this before.
As to the plugs, absolutely. The stock plugs are platinum which the whole concept behind platinums is to resist firing (enough to increase longevity). This is why they are "supposed" to last 100k. A softer metal plug that is more conductive will have a stronger spark, therefore once igniting the A/F mixture, it will do so more completely, therefore eliminating any possible "ping" coming from incomplete combustion.

I'm just too lazy to change them. Number 8 scares me! This weekend I'm swapping them.
I am having the same problem with my car on hot days, WOT at about 5K+ RPM. Here in CA, they just de-tuned the fuel to 91 octane. My car has 22K miles on it, and the pinging sounds like steel b-bs shaking around in a coffee can. I heard that sea-foam or the GM carbon deposit cleaner may work. You spray it into the vacume line.
Are new plugs the way to go?
Should I be able to see pinging by reading the computer?
Thanks,
Scott

It was hot last sunday, so I took my car out to test my new shift light. It was pinging like crazy. So I was thinking that I would try the chemical treatment idea. I was recommended Berryman "professional" fuel system maintence kit. $29.00. 3 cans of stuff in 1 box. 1. TB cleaner (carb cleaner) that I didn't even use. 2. A can of combustion chamber cleaner (suck it in thru the PVC inlet) that I did use. 3. Fuel system cleaner (pour it in the tank).
Results are: No more pinging! Better drive-ablity. Less lurching. Better throttle response.
Highly recommeded. I will use this treatment religously every 10K miles from now on.
