Default Aftermarket Cats And COT

I was wondering if aftermarket cats are as susceptible to heat damage as the stockers. For example, I have a pair of Random Tech Hi-Flo cats, so does the COT table need to be modified (for example raising the temperatures) for those cats, or do you think that the stock table applies for all types of catalytic converters? All thoughts welcome.

Here is my take on the situation. Many disagree.

Too much emphasis is put into the COT protection. Here are my reasons why.

1) People have been running around with the COT "bypassed" for years. As soon as you put a set of O2 simulators in place of the rear O2 sensors, you have essentially just bypassed the COT protection.

2) LT headers relocate the CAT's over a foot away from where they were originally. The CATs are placed so close to the header because it takes a significant amount of heat to "light off" the CAT and have them run effectively. Relocating the CATs to after the long tube exposes them to significantly cooler exhaust gases than those just leaving the cylinder.

3) Aside from those who have put leaded gas in their car, or ran with an exhaust leak for an extended time I have yet to hear of anyone wiping out a CAT. This stands especially true for those who use cats with O2 simulators.

I wouldn't worry about the COT if you ask me, but that is just my opinion.

Good Luck,
Kevin

That's interesting. . . so do you mean that by "not worrying about COT," disabling it on a car WITH cats probably wouldn't damage them?

Thanks <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" /> .

I would never advise anybody to turn off their COT with cats on their car. Heaven forbid it may spontaneously explode mere miles after you switch it off.

I am just here to point out that many people have run cats with the COT off because of O2 sims and not had a problem.

Good Luck,
Kevin
