Default MAF--Port,descreen,or leave stock

I'm kinda new to this so any comments would be helpful. I have had my 2000 WS6 for about a year now. I have installed MTI lid,HPP3,160* stat,k&n,Borla, free air mod, throttle body coolant bypass and yes, home ported and de-screened MAF. I recently purchased a new stock MAF to install on the car because I've heard horror stories about the home porting. I'm needing some opinions on this before I install this new one. Would it be better to go back to stock and just descreen it or leave it the way it is.
Also, performance wise, with all these bs mods I've done, car doesn't seem to be running as good as it should. I ran it on a 1/8 mile track and had a best of 8.5. Is this about avg or is it as bad as I thought? Oh,...it's A4. I have a set of 3.73's on the way. How much should I expect going from 3.23 to 3.73? What would be my next best bang for the buck purchase? Stall, cam,LT's,etc ?
I know it's alot of questions but we all gotta start somewhere right... Thanks!

Since you have an A4, you should descreen the MAF and then leave it alone. You don't want any tranny problems. Stay away from MAF ends too. Look elsewhere to mod your car. The MAF is not a good thing to mess with. There are plenty of other mods that will get you big rwhp.

The 1/8 time seems OK for the limited mods. But the 1/4 will give you a much better indication. If there's a 1/4 mile around where you live, take it there instead and see how you do.

As far as the MAF, I would leave it alone. You're way better off going with a GMAF that's calibrated or with LS1Edit or a Predator that can flash the ECM. If I'm not mistaken, the stock MAF can flow a decent amount of CFM, probably enough for your mods for a long time to come. And the screen isn't all that inhibitive. I say leave it alone and concentrate on the other mods you talked about. The 3.73's are going to make a huge difference for you. I made the exact same swap (3.23 to 3.73) in my 93 Z. My gain was about a half second (13.9x to a best of 13.32). After the gears I would look at either Edit or a Predator. I can get you a good price on a Predator if you end up going that route. Send me an E-mail if you're interested. But you'll need tuning after a stall, LT's, or the cam. I would do it now so you have the ability to tune later. And tuning, even on stock motors, yields anywhere from 5-15 RWHP depending on the car/mods. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick replys. I have heard that porting the maf causes tranny probs. I guess I'll just slap the new one on and go from there.

Somewhere, probably here, I read that it has something to do with the line pressure in the trans...I think, I'm still learning though. Don't rely on just that, I may be wrong.

I have also heard that it causes A4 tranny problems due to the line pressure. But you would need to ask someone who's in the know about A4's.

The maf sensor measures the amount of air flowing into the engine and calculates engine load based on that figure. This load figure is sent to the tranny to determine if it needs to up line pressure b/c of increased load. When you descreen and port the sensor there is some air that gets by the sensor without being measured so the sensor thinks the engine is at a lower load than what it really is. That means the tranny wont up the line pressure as much as it normally would. BUT, this descreening thing has been around since maf first came out in the 80's and not everyones tranny went out. I left mine in cause to me its not worth worrying about a $2000 tranny to gain a couple hp if any. Its really up to you but I would recomend putting a stock screened one back in.

Thanks all of you especially CW 99. Mine is descreened but not ported. Guess I'll leave it at this state. Can think of alot of things I'd rather spend 2 bills on :-)
