Default How to view ATAP log files?

I just got ATAP and hooked it up last night to my buddies Z. I have a couple of newbie type questions.

First off, as the Subject denotes, how do I view the log files. I inserted about ten perameters and recorded a couple of blats and saved the log file. It's 42k so I know there's data inside of it, but how do I view it? I tried opening it in ATAP but it keeps asking me about the config file? I saved the config file at the same time I saved the log file, so I'm assuming that's the right config file that I need to view/open the log file. But when I open the log file I get nothing on the screen.

Is there some ATAP newbie sight? I mean there are so many perameters for me to monitor but so few of them I can recognize. How do I figure out which ones are valuable to me?

I'm not sure if all my peramters are working currently. While running the scan I had three fields that didn't seem to be working right; current gear, Air/Fuel Ratio, throttle body position angle, and something about engine torque. The current gear always read 1. Is this a setting for automatics? We were in an M6, but this value never changed. The other thing that never changed was the A/F ratio. It aways read 14.6:1. I doubt the true A/F was that static. I'm currect in assuming the A/F will jump around as the RPMs change right? 14.6:1 is lean, should my friend be worried? I read on instaluni.com about the throttle body blade ange trick so I figured I'd monitor that my first time out. Well it hit angle over 816 degrees!!!! That thing must be spinning like dradel What gives on this one? The other peremeter which didn't seem right was something in the transmission section, something about engine torque output. Appartently, my buddy got one of those factory freak LS1s, cause his torque would shoot up to 2300 ft. lbs.

Guys I'm a total newbie to this stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Mike

ok here is whatcha do.....

open a config file(doesnt have to be connected to car(your opening in playback mode )

go to log
open log file for playback(find your config file you just saved/recorded)
then export to comma dilimited file
that should save it as a excel file

then simply open excel

as far as the a/f goes on atap i wouldnt go by it

just log the O2's

Except undr WOT the computer is ALWAYS trying to maintain the 14.6 or 14.7 AFR.

With the M6 the gear doesn't work.

I never even bothered monitoring the TQ.

The throttle position angle should reach a maximum of 100%, theoretically. Mine will go up tp 99.6%, but I haven't tried it by taking out the floor mat first so the peddle may go down slightly more. Something definitely wrong there.

My first step was just logging alot of different things just to familiarize myself with them while I read up on the LS1 Edit reprogramming. Then I set out to get my LTRIMS in line and now tweaking the AFR under WOT some to try and get it closer to where I want. The AT readout under WOT for AFR was definitely different than what the wide band on the dyno was reading. My next step is working on modifying the timing, getting it advanced as much as possible without causing knock.

The afr is what the computer wants (commands) and not what you acually get. Also at WOT the computer is not trying to maintain the afr at 14.7 that number is only for cruise. The actual afr at WOT will be (or should be) a lot richer (smaller number). The computer does not look at the o2 sensor at WOT, they are not accurate for anything but cruise. You need a wideband o2 meter to do that.

I copy the saved log file (ATAP file with the engine functions) to "my documents", then I open Excel and click on open file, select the all file option to list all files that are in "my documents", the I click on the saved log ATAP file name. Open the file as it is delimited bt commas.

Harold, Thanks bro, that worked perfectly!

Guys, All your advise was right on. Thanks!

Looks like many of the things in that Tranny section are there for A4s. I finally pulled the Hawk out and am ready to start playing with her.

Can you guys tell me the basic parameters I need to be monitoring? I got in LS1Edit so I trying to figure out what I need to monitor in ATAP to help me tune in LS! Edit.

Also does anyone know of a sight that explains these different parameters, the ones not commonly used?

You guys are the best. Thanks.

Still tryin to figure ATAP out. Can someone tell me the importance of the long and short fuel trims? What should they read and what do these numbers tell me about how my cvar is running? If these are not the parameters I'm su[pposed to be monitoring, then please let me know which ones are the correct ones.

Thanks Guys,
Mike

I've been readin through all that stuff and it's great. Just the kind of info I was looking for. I have a question though. That site supplies a configuration file. However it is in .cfg format and not .atc format. Is this a config file from an older version? If so could someone point me in the right direction of a more up-to-date file? Or possibly list out the parameters that make up that config file.

Just by looking at the screen capture these are the parameters that I think it is looking for:

Short Term Fuel Bank 1
Long Term Fuel Bank 1
Short Term Fuel Bank 2
Long Term Fuel Bank 1
Engine Speed
Vehicle Speed
O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1 (%)
O2 Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 1 (%)
Fuel Trim Cell
Knock Retard
Engine Coolant Temp
Throttle Position Sensor
Ignition Timing Advance
Mass Air Flow Rate

Am I missing any? Do I have the right ones so far? If you look at the site and see the .jpg the columns I can't figure out are: (Timing, Time Hack).

I'm assuming IAT is the same thing as Ignition Timing Advance.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Buschman, a good person to talk to is Jason at
EFA central or Fireball on their technical site (I see that you are close to me in location).

Me personally, I dialed in my ltft as close to 0 as possible with a maft (adjusting the base) and then dialed in my O2's (adjusting the wot). I then went to Hefner's dyno in Baltimore with Jason to fine tune after he did my heads. One thing we will be doing is tuning on the wideband with the ls1 edit and just use the maft for track fine tuning.

One thing to note is especially with atap is use only the fewest variables (no more than 5 or 6) that you need to get as large a sampling as possible to get a complete read. What I do is I have a wot autotap template and also a ltft template. For example, on the wot template I record o2b1,o2b2, timing, throttle position sensor (only look at wot which will be 99-100%), engine speed and engine coolant temp. - that's it. When you dump it all into excel get the average for each column of data. (Remember to delete all the non 99% or greater throttle position sensor data).

Also though I would definitely talk to those guys though because they do it all the time.
