I think someone turned the miles back on my car!!!!
I was just wondering if it is possible, because my car only had 16000 miles on it when i got it and it isnt in the shape to only have that many miles. But what seemed to be the orignal brake pads still have a lot of pad left so im skeptical. Do you think the miles were turned back?
Thanks

you can buy a cluster with less miles than the car originally has and install it to "fake" the actual milage on a car...check the VIN for any clues as to why the car is in whatever shape it seems to be in...good luck! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

Check with your local GM dealership. They have a fancy computer thingy, whenever someone gets an oil change or service work, the VIN and mileage are entered along with the date. It may be in the national system, or maybe not. Also try carfax, any past insurance claims, ect. Those things always have mileages and dates on them. Ask the place where you get titles (DMV, Tax collector) to tell you how many titles there have been and if they have record of the old ones. They may find a discrepancy in the mileage.

If it was set back they would have to either replace the cluster with a new 0 mile one. Or someone with delphi service equipment i.e. an instrument cluster rebuilder reburnt the eprom in your cluster (I never heard of one doing a reflash).

Just looked in the paper someone selling a 98 guage cluster with 9.5K on it for 270 bucks. The engine is for sale in another ad. Not that this guy is trying to sell it for that reason, but someone who knows what to do could get away with it. If you got 40K on a clean car, for under $300 you could have a lot less mileage.

If you do find out that it's been messed with, the dealer or whoever you bought it from HAS to give you your money back, plus how much it cost to register the car. That is, if you want to get away from the car. (I would) If it's been messed with, it becomes an unknown mileage vehicle as soon as the discovery of tampering is made. This has to be annotated on the title and buyers must be made aware of it. Could you imagine trying to sell a car like that?
Buyer: "how many miles does she have on her?"
Bubba: "Uhhhh, yep! A bunch of em."
Buyer: "give me two! One to **** on and one to cover it up with. Goodbye."

Does you IP have a mechanical or digital (electronic) odometer? If it is digital it can only be done thru software, but if it is mechanical it can be done by disassembling the gear drive. It's a form of ring and pinion. I saw this done in the pits at HRP. It's not that hard. Sort of like watch repair for auto mechanics.

Re: I think someone turned the miles back on my car!!!!
Isn't 98 the year that if you unplug the clutser it resets to zero? For some reason I think I remember reading that? I know I've read that you shouldn't drive a 98 without the cluster because it won't charge the batterie correctly. I'm thinking this stuff was written in one of the posts when the 200 mph speedo came out and everyone was seeing about sending their clusters in to be recalibrated?

I have no idea what you paid for the car, but these cars are easy to work with and repair. They are real good bang for the buck. It is a 98' SS, after all. If it were mine, I wouldn't be too concerned with the mileage. Instead, I would focus on the meachinical condition of things, as a cue.

I think the dealer can check to see if the mileage is correct. I think the ECM keeps track of the mileage and also how many hours the motor has one it.
