Default MAFT tuning

I was wondering if it were possible to achieve an optimum air/fuel ratio tuning a MAFT using only an A/F gauge to measure.

i hate it when nobody replies to a straight forward question of mine.. so here it is for you

for wide open tuning our oxygen sensors are not calibrated to read 'perfectly' so the %error is greater than what you would want to bet money on, that and the light gauge is really hard to pinpoint an exact voltage.. with autotap i say you have a decent tuning ability, but the gauge is mostly to just see a good or 'bad' situation.

dont get me wrong you can definitely use it and make changes in the right direction.. but not 'optimal' like you said

what about the digital ones. i seen one on ebay that reads the voatage off the sensor. is it any better.

If you think you're running rich, easiest thing to do if you have ATAP is to monitor your O2's anyway, but knock most importantly. Do a few fourth gear runs with autotap, and review to see if there was less than 3 degrees of knock. If you see there was no knock, lean it out another 2%. When you start getting knock, you should stop adjusting. I did this with mine, and on the wideband, only had to change it 2 more percent lean. Hope this helps.

A digital read out will give the same numbers as atap, but it is difficult to watch the o2 voltage during wide open runs at 100+ mph. Easier just to log wide open runs with atap, and that way you can also monitor coolant temp, air intake temp, timing advance and knock retard. I usualy shoot for an o2 voltage of between .905 to .915 volts.

You could always run a Scanmaster like i do.. its on my dash and in my view while im at WOT. you cant see real time 02 #'s and Knock retard.
