Default My tripometer resets when i start

Hey guys, about 50% of the times when i start my car, my tripometer resets back to zero. It almost seems like my computer is resetting itself also. Any ideas on what the problem might be, i would be thankful.

It's a '99 thing - happens with low voltage battery/bad terminal connection. Resets to zero, sometimes accompanied by the gauges sweeping on startup. I'd check the connections and get the battery load tested. Here's the TSB if you want to check it out - sometimes the guage cluster needs to be replaced if it's not the battery: "99-08-49-009 Trip Odometer Resets to Zero (Exchange/Install Instrument Cluster." Happens more in cold weather.

If the gauges do a full sweep too it's the battery.

Is there a link to the TSB?

I am having the same issue. Battery is right at about 3 years old though.

For those saying battery is the problem, you had a guage double sweep & trip reset upon start up and with a new battery all that stopped?

EDIT - Found a link:

Every time mine does it (which is a lot lately), it seems like the idle trims are reset, because the car will not idle to save its life for the first 5 minutes. Its getting really annoying. Also, it only seems to do it when I'm not using HPTuners, I cannot get any sort of a log of whats going on. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Kevin

If I had a '99 with symptoms I'd get the battery load tested first.

Wow, never knew it was a 99 thing, but I had that issue with all of said symptoms, and they all went away with a new battery. Do it!

I had the exact same problem on my 99 when what it seemed like the temperature droped below 38 degress the trip/odometer would reset back to zero. I ended up learning about the TSB online and brought the car into a dealer where they had record of it, which they proceeded to fix free of charge and have since never encountered any more problems like that.

I live in Texas, and it's doing it with 60 degree weather. I'm guessing maybe the battery is going bad based on the responses. It's about 3 years old according to the prior owner.

Is there a particular battery or amp spec that I should look for that would help address this issue and avoid the voltage dip?

Just be sure you get a 690 CCA battery for the LS1, the V6 battery is only 525. Sears sold me a Diehard gold "warm weather" battery that was 550 and only lasted me a couple years. I have an Optima red top now, it's 720 CCA.

Thanks! I'll double check what's in there now, but I don't think it is a 600 number.

Good chance it might not be - I looked in my Helms when the Die Hard died hard - Sears assured me it was the correct battery for my car, because their parts computer "said so." They did give me full credit for what I paid for it when I got the Optima though.

Checked it. 650 amps, 525 cca.

The cca number is the more important, correct?

CCA is what's listed in Helms. My Optima says CA 910, CCA 720.
