LS1 and Megasquirt trigger wheels
This is my first post on here and i'm extremely happy to find you guys- there are about 50 people in the UK who use the LS1 so tech is in very short supply!
I am installing an LS1 into an 4x4 racing truck, and will to use MegaSquirt (using the Ford EDIS system) to control fuel and spark.
There seems to be an issue with trigger wheel positioning on the LS1- the internal trigger doesn't seem to be useable without replacing (and i really do not want to drop the crank). However the nose of the crank doens't have any sort of woddruff key which would hold the trigger wheel in position if i used an aftermarket 36-1. i have found one post on the whole of the net (on here) which shows a solution but i can't really see how it was done.
So, how can i stick a trigger wheel on an LS1 crank and make sure there is zero movement on the trigger wheel? Also does the VR sensor fit nicely to the front of the block- are there any mounting holes?
[please note- i don't actually have the LS1 to look at yet- it is being shipped from a company called Clevelan Pick-a-part as we speak]
thanks
James

(also from the right side of the pond
) That all gets pretty complicated, honestly use the stock 99+ (98 will work as well but the 99+ has more optins for forced induction if that matters) computer and engine harness and you can use EFIlive or HPtuner and have a great ignition and SEFI. Stock LS1 PCM and ignition is on quite a few 1000+hp cars, if its forced induction you can get 2 or 3 bar cutom operating systems and just speed density as well.
I have played wit the megasquirt and its a neet little box but nowhere near as sophisticated or hardened as the stock LS1 PCMs. If you are buying a pullout LS1 make sure and get the PCM and harness, if you can wire up a megasquirt you should be able to de-wire the stock engine harness without a problem.
unit is being used for off roading and lots of torque.
like the Megasquirt stuff because i have used it before and i can get aprts in the UK!
Hey Jim- what's the Cob? GD? Dax? engine? are you in the Cobraclub? i post on there as pugwash too although i don't post much anymore- not quite onto a cobra yet.
whats all this efi and hpt stuff then- any good links which explain it all?

Are both tuning programs for the LS based vehicles using the stock computer. Both are VERY powerful and give you a lot of tunability.
As for the Megasqurit, it a neat little fi controller as well. PM Brains on here, he was working on a solution for it to fire the stock LS1 coils.

I was thinking of MSnS while I was planning my transplant, however once you get your nose inside the capabilities of the GM PCM it's errr pretty damn good! I went for EFI Live in the end (software and interface cable/black box) along with a wide band controller from Innovate, threw in a different cam (and some other bits) - tuning has been easy so far (the M4 is my dyno
).Rgds

the problem i have is that the car is going to be used in extremely hostile conditions- it is likely that the ECu will get very battered and probably soaked. MS will allow me to cheaply carry a spare ECU in a waterproof container and swap them in minutes. Also 2 MS ecus cost less than the EFI software which is good. so i think i'll stick with Megasquirt- certainly if this LS1 was going in a Cob (i'm building a GD next year hopefully- it's been on the cards a while though- quite taken with a T70 at the mo!) then i would use this EFI stuff though.
Jim- what have you done for CATs- does Andy B at GD supply them? if so were they expensive?

). Cats, didn't bother with them as my GD went through SVA with an old RV8 motor (3.5% CO test) therefore I can breeze through the test without Cats now
, Andy does them, just not sure how much they are though.Cheers
