Excellent. I was going to ask, but decided against it. I wish there was some way to filter out the "how do you tune" threads.

Lol I also wanted to add that, the best way to learn, is to just buy it, and once you have it and are looking at it....you will have a waaay better understanding of what questions to ask

If you know what "Air/Fuel Ratio" and "knock retard" is.....you can probably tune your car...It gets tougher only when dealing with more wildy modified cars...also, some of the newer models arent as easy to tune, but it's not rocket science....

Guys I admit I didn't read much yet, but still I'd ask...
What will I need to tune LS1 so???are-wise and hardware-wise?
Have been tuning Nissan Silvia, but now hope to get something BIGGER (like LS1 )
So what do I need to tune ECU on LS1-car?

EFI live and a non pre-historic laptop with a decent battery and a USB connection is all you really need.

As for the original question, I learned by reading a lot of the stuff on this board, by trial and error, and using common sense. EFI Live did a great job with providing descriptions for nearly every setting in their tuning soft.ware. So, a little common sense goes a long way. I believe it's also an advantage to be able to visualize things in your mind. If you can create a mental road map of the tables and how they interact, that's 80+% of the battle. The other things just take time to figure out...like:

How the car reacts to timing under light, moderate, heavy and no throttle.
Where to tackle the light and off throttle surging associated with aftermarket cams.
How to get an A4 to perform like or better than stock with aftermarket converters without blowing it to hell from too much line pressure.
How to keep the engine from over correcting and creating huge swings at idle (usually associated with aftermarket cams).
Establishing overall idle quality after a cam swap.

I could go on....but these are the kinds of things this forum is here for. If it's not in the sticky....post up. Someone should chime in to at least get you started in the right direction.

OK, as I see it now, there are 2 basic choices - HP Tuners, and EFILive, both are hardware/so???are combos, and both are $700+ for full-featured versions?
Do they offer real-time tuning?
This is getting expensive after getting used to Nissan tuning with freeware soft + ROM emulator

HP Tuners allows you to tune most 99+ LS1 style computers for the initial cost of the Standard($499) or Pro($649) versions.

You can see more here http://www.hptuners.com/products/vcmsuite_enhance.php and here http://www.hptuners.com/help/vcm_editor_rtt.htm

The basic V1 unit from efilive is only $550.
It comes with Unlimited 97-98 computer tuning. So you can tune 1,000,000 cars for free. lol

It also comes with stand alone datalogging at a push of a button, and Inputs for your wideband.

The other companies may sound like they are cheaper in the begining, but all the little add ons start to add up in price very quickly..

No games here, just good soft.ware and great support.

Saw there are differencies between 98' and 99+ ECUs, what are they?
Is 98' less tunable than 99+?

So does EFI when you have to buy the $800 (plus the EFI so???are) computer to have RTT when you can do it with HPT for the cost of the soft/ hardware, but thats for another pissing match.

Itsall about reading, understanding and knowing how an engine works.

$599 on moates site and $199 EFI Live license?
$599 on moates site and $125 TunerCat license (with definition 225)

Roadrunner-DIY: "Guts" Kit [Model: RR_KIT]

You can put it into any ls1 based 99 up pcm. Sorry, the price is $489.

They arent that hard to put into your stock pcm. If you have a good soldering iron.

The ones that are fully assembled with a different pcm are $599.
