With our real time tuning custom OS's you can make changes in real time using the stock computer while the engine is running & moving for that matter that take instantly...once your done making the changes just copy the tables you've changed to the actual calibration and then perform a calibration write.

I have had EFIlive for about 6 months and still haven't figured it out. I wish there was someone in the East Texas area that knew how to use this program. I would be willing to pay for their time just so I can learn how to tune.

One thing I wanted to add. I found, mainly with HPT ( I don't have much experience with any other programs) is that the views available made a large difference in decreasing intimidation and frustration when I was starting out. If you try to learn with the program in the advanced view there are a ton of extra tables and toggles I found not necessary for a beginner to know about or adjust.
Stick to the beginner views when your an infant tuner and change the views once you are comfortable with the beginner view or need more tables to achieve your goal.

I was self taught back before there were books or classes (started when there was nothing but LS1edit). Learned a lot the hard way for sure...
The first step is to have a good understanding of how fuel injection and all of the sensors involved work and interact.
Secondly, get comfortable with the software you choose to use. Get to know the tuning and scanning suites inside and out.
While you are doing that, read anything and everything you can on tuning... like someone above said, you can always learn something from a book/article/thread/etc, no matter what brand or size engine it applies to. The basics apply to all internal combustion engines...
If you can take a specific class, or find a mentor to teach you, that is great too. If not, start small and don't be intimidated. There are plenty of sources for help if you get stuck or want to know more about something before starting...
Learning how to interpret data from scans is a huge help - especially helpful in determining when problems are mechanical in nature vice in the tune...

I started with my first Fbody car which I could tune and data log the cheapest was my 95 Formula. Spent 45 bucks on a cable, downloaded programs to flash pcm and data log. Figured out how everything works by looking and reading. Just wish my 98 WS6 Trans Am was as easy as my 95 Formula.
(600 bucks for HP Tuners kit....)
