Help with voltometer

Help with voltometer OK my voltometer is acting weird, it will be fine driving for about 30 minutes and then all of a sudden it shoots up to 18 and stays in the red and my lights are all glowing bright and it stays there. It has already burned out all of my headlights last night and my left blinker. I think that there is a short somewhere but thats all i can think of. Any help is appreciated.

I believe there's a regulator on the alternator that keeps the voltage in check... a short wouldn't cause a voltage increase like you're seeing.... most likely have to have the alternator rebuilt

wow thats weird, i told my dad yesterday that it was the alternator and he didnt think so, well ill get another one from autozone tomorrow as i have a warranty. if this is the problem i appreciate it.
An open / intermittent in the sense line would make
this kind of action; the alt "sees" a low sense voltage
and tries to "fix" it. Check the plug connector at the
alt; follow the fat wire to where it picks up the IGN
voltage feed, looking for anything physically not-right.
