Default Anyone using LS1Edit on a Laptop with XP??

The problem is that my Laptop doesnt have the serial 9 pin port. So the LS1 Edit connection doesnt fit. I asked Dave at Carputing and he said i should either use a serial 9pin port to USB adaptor or PCMMCI connection. The problem is that most of them arent compatable with XP. I tired three different kinds of serial 9 pin to USB adaptor with no luck. So I want to know if there is someone who had the same problem and how did he fix it?
Thank you.

I couldn't get XP to work with Edit either; it worked for about a month and then the software (Windows) kept shutting down my serial port. I ended up buying a used laptop and dedicating it for use with Edit and EASE. Even if you get the adapter issue resolved, I'm sure there will be other issues with XP that make it prohibitive. Windows 98 or Windows 2000 Professional (based on NT) work best with Edit.

Good luck!

I use it on an Inspiron 8200 - it works fine with XP (as well as Windows 2003 FWIW). The OS itself is fine, it's the USB -> Serial adapters that tend to cause problems - the pcmcia solution is much more relaible.

The funny thing is that my Gateway 600L came with a serial port; for me, it was the software (XP) causing the problems. A tech at Gateway checked a list to see if LS1 Edit was "approved or registered" with MS, and it wasn't, so he said that in time the software will figure that out and close the serial port. An independent computer tech said basically the same thing, that XP is not allowing the software to run. Edit worked fine on XP for more than a month.

Call Guy at eastside performance they are a sponser here. When I was at the shop talking with him he has XP and is running it off a USB to serial Adapter. I asked him how it worked and he told me that they needed to get a GOOD adapter. I think he said it was like $60 but I cant remember the brand.

XP will *NOT* close the port for "unapproved" software programs - the gateway guy was just giving you a line of BS.

If you are using a USB -> Serial adapter it is going to be hit or miss which one works for you - if you are using the serial port and have a problem then you have an install/configuration issue.

I run ls1edit on XP home. Laptop is HP xe4100 which has a serial port. No problems so far.
I believe many new HPs still have built in serial ports.

BS or not, my serial port ("closed") did not function with Edit. I had my serial port loopback tested and it is okay, but Edit wouldn't communicate with my pcm. Also, I'm talking about XP Professional (I don't know about other versions of XP).

I KNOW that others have had success with some versions of XP and Edit, but on my setup, XP Professional and Edit "mysteriously" stopped functioning.

I feel that it's my duty to report this to respective users of XP Pro and Edit. I've never had an issue with Edit and Win98 and Win2000 Pro: from my experience, that seems to be the way to fly.

Predator: Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you didn't have problems, just that it was not due to an incompatability with XP; rather it was probably something that replaced/corrupted one of the dll files used by LS1 Edit (most likely), or another program that took control of the com port and wouldn't release it. If you have/had any system restore points set you could try rolling the system back to see if that fixed the problem.

LSs1Power - Yep, it works with XP no problem - my suggestion would be to pick a laptop that has a serial port built into it - that will guarauntee maximumm compatability (the usb adapters can work, but they can also be flaky at times)

Just bought a Compaq 1.8 celeron W/9 pin serial port and XP at best buy. There are 2 100.00 dollar rebates on that item bringing the price to 799.00. The computer works well, but has not yet been checked out on edit or autotap. But I did specificly get it because of the built in serial port.

My opinion is to get one now. All the newer models do not have a 9 pin port on them. By the way Compaq and HP are the same computer now.

Fair enough Chris. I had tried system restore, win95 and 98 program compatibility, switching comm ports, reinstalling XP and Edit, disabling the modem and infrared, and a bunch of other attempted fixes, that I can't recall, to no avail. Anyway, I'm sure there is an explanation, and it could be what you said. Thankfully, after getting another laptop, I don't have to deal with that nightmare anymore.

Keyspan.com. That is what I read on here. It works with my new Dell Inspiron 5100 with XP. If you shop around on the net, you can get the USB-Serial adapter for about $40.

I got reply from Dave at carputing after he saw the Logcomm's files and he said he never saw something like that before. He said that the Computer is sending the information to the PCM and get the same information again. The PCM is not sending anything to the laptop. He suggested that i try another PC that has the serial port. Im going to try that today and tell u guys what happens.

Just tried the LS1 Edit with a desktop that has 98 windows and it did work great. So i guess the problem was the USB ports. So i might just get me a used laptop that has a serial port with win 98 for the car.

Oh by the way guys, when u finish downloading the Flash file, what do u have to do after that to get LS1 Edit work? which program should i open the Flash file with?

You use the "LS1-Edit" interface to open and edit the files; you use the "LS1prog" interface to download your flash file and to upload your edited file. When you download your flash file, it's good idea to make multiple copies saved to floppies. Also, I would document any changes you make to your flash file with either "Notepad" or "Wordpad" in Windows Accessories, and save a copy of that document to a floppy disk too.

go to www.usbgear.com that is where I got mine from. It wasn't easy to get the usb-serial port adapter to work, but now it works fine. Cost me around 28 bucks. Here's the link directly to the cable.. http://www.usbgear.com/item_288.html good luck!
