Hello all!

/Here s my deal, i bought my 2000 TA in 05, my SES lgith came on shortly there after. P0480, cooling fan relay number 1....both fans run fine from what i can hear. So, obviously, i changed all 3 of the large relays on the engine bay fuse panel...no changes. I have a wire mod that was complete by the original owner.



I am going to try to find the culprit for my over two year code of P0480, but am really clueless on how, where, etc. I have the Gearchatter info, i have the wireing schmatic, pin out list, etc...but am still pretty stupid on what to do.

So,,just leanring that the wire(s) in question (dark green # 33 on connector 1, and dark blue # 42 on connector 2) are involved. i need to know how or what wires these actually are ( i will removing my tire and inner fender cover to access my wires, are they the only dark blue and green wires in that bunch of wires? What the hell do i do when i find them?,,i have a test light, but have never done any backprobing b4...anthing i need to know, or just jab into the wire and see if my light comes on? I assume that i will just be tracing and testing these wires all the way to the fan motors,,,,or relays,,,not sure, and how do i check the connections where the relays go,,,do i just stik my test light probe in the lil holes?, (eeeek) im really at a loss, and realllllllly tired of the light. Like i metnioned, fans kick on and off as they should, changed the relays, but still have the code. I have tried to erase, but it always comes back.

4 years of p0480. Still there, still no scan tool so the big ol list of things from that gearhead site are doing nothing for me.

 

Does the vehicle have a manual fan switch wired in?

nada, original owner also stated that it never had one in it. The code came on the day i was driving it home though.

 

So first things first- learn about the fan relay wiring and look yourself. I honestly cant believe you typed that the light came on during the drive home and " he said it never had one" in the same thread.

 

yeah, i hear ya. But he's a stand up dude. I still talk to the guy every now and then, you might too as he is a Sponser on here. if he misinformed me, its due to the fact that ....
1. it was years ago
2. he works on cars all the time, so info could have been lost in the sauce
3. etc

I have traced the wires, all seem ok, im just a idiot with electrical problems, and dont have the first clue on where to start testing with a test light. I have wiring diagrams, the gearchatter info, a PCM pin out for my year (2000) a test light and even a multimeter. I just need help on where do i stick it! And how to read the diagram... i dont have it in front of me, and its been a bit since i last looked at it, but want to get this figured out this year, so i thought id look up my old threads on this topic to see if any thing came up.

 

I've only had that code come up once, and it was due to my manual fan switch I was developing being broken.

To test this, I would want to disconnect all 3 relays, pull the pcm connector off of the pcm, and measure resistance between the trigger of the pcm relay 1 socket, and the terminal of the pcm for the low speed fan, repeat the same for the high speed fan terminal, to the high speed fan terminals, both should be near 0 resistance.

Check for shorts to ground, there should be no path to ground.

You will need a multimeter and not just a test light to do these tests.

when u say pull the pcm connector off the pcm,,,,,,are you stating to take the lil gray cover off, and pull the wire out? sorry, im just really lost with elec stuff....hell,, i dont even know what setting to put my meter on. i know,, i suck

 

actually remove the 80 pin connector, using the 7mm bolt that holds it into place, once it is removed, you will need to get some 18-20 gauge wire, or a probe to push into the terminal to measure the resistance.

For your meter, you will want to use the Ω symbol, to measure resistance.

Cool,,my meter has pin type leads on it,,,this should get me started,,thanx a million,,,i might be PM'ing you as i go through it.
Anyone else with suggestions, plz add them!! The more the merrier.

Figured it out...it was some faulty wiring that was shorting out

 

Did you follow all of the steps in this diagnostic chart?
