Default Diablo Tuner or custom tune for stock 99 LS1?

I have had many Lt1 cars but this is my first LS1. I need your help. I just bought a 1999 Z28 vert. A4 one owner with 21k on the clock. The car is bone stock and perfect. The trans functions and converter lock up functions suck from the factory. The car is 305HP at the crank. Probably 20% less at the rear tires. I am going to leave the car stock other than maybe a cat back and k&N and any simple cheap mods. What kind or HP increase can I get and what cheap mods are out there?

Should I have the car dyno tuned or just get a Diablo tuner and why?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Greg

A Predator would be great in your application.
The tunes will add about 15 rwhp and the Predator will give you control over shift points, shift pressures, and more.
Plus you can get custom tunes from any of our CMR dealers if you decide to make some bigger mods down the road.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

Thanks
Mike

You don't (at least on my old Predator) get the kind of shift
point control you need to wake up an A4 properly. I only had
WOT shiftpoints and a very generic shift time / pressure option.
What really makes the car come alive for street / road course
driving is the part throttle shift MPH (and torque converter
lockup) tables. This is one of various reasons why my old
Predator sits somewhere in the tool room, in a bag.

Figuring either a handheld or a hired tune will set you back
over half of the cost of fully capable tuning software & cable
(presuming you have a laptop already) I don't really favor
either of your choices. If you mean to leave it stock then
maybe a mail order tune like wait4me does, makes sense.
A dyno tune will not be focused on the streetability aspects
like part throttle shiftpoints. You'd want to ask any such
shop about that, what they can do, whether they have a
good idea about what & why. I (or others) could provide
you setups we're happy with for that if all you need is the
guy to stuff it into the PCM after the WOT roller work is
done. But you need to read the menu before you order, to
know you're entitled to any more than 4 pulls, tweaks
limited to the power enrichment vs RPM table, and a receipt.

I wouldn't do the K&N because it tends to drift the tune (by
adding MAF error over time). Unless you are diligent in both
filter goop procedure and MAF cleaning. Stick with paper and
change it occasionally.
