Confused on RPO codes... plus police intercepter pckge?
I have a 2000 Trans Am. I was ripped when i bought it, they said it was WS6 when i found out it wasnt.... It has the WS9 code and the Y82 code? So is it a formula or a trans am or what? Plus it has ram air, the hood is a stock looking hood, not the big aftermarket look alike ones. Then to add to this, when i got it i noticed it didnt idle well so i took it in for an oil change and had them check it, well my mech. said the timeing was advanced 6 degrees and he turned it back to zero, then it ran not as good so i took it back, and he said he called gm and ran the pcm numbers and i guess it is a police intercepter stage one????? Does anybody know how to switch to a higher stage somehow? or what the car is? It is just boggling me... Thanks

He refunded me a bit, the stage deal is all in the computer im pretty sure. The guy i bought it from got hustled first then i caught it when he sold it. He always thought it was a WS6, it had the hood, and where the badge was missing there was still glue on the car so he thought it was just the ws6 badge missing when actually it was a dealers badge i think. I started to think it wasnt a ws6 when i noticed the rear sway bar not being huge...

The rear swaybars on a WS6 are the same as a regular Trans Am/Formula 19mm.
WS9 means it is a V8 Firebird, Y82 is the Trans Am RPO. The Formula RPO is W66
WS9 + W66 = Formula
WS9 + Y82 = Trans Am

You've already stated that you have the Y82 code so the car is obviously a Trans Am.
The confusion usually comes from the Vin # being used to ID the vehicle
On Our 4th Gen Birds the Vin does not distinguish between Formula or Trans Am. So the RPO codes are the best and easiest way to identify the model.
Also WS9 is refered to as the "Formula conversion Pkg". This does not mean the car is or ever was a Formula. It merely identifies that the vehicle is a V8 equipped Firebird. The previously mentioned W66 and Y82 codes must be in place to properly identify the model.

Thanks I understand now. Im going to be putting headers on in less than 2 weeks and after that i plan on going and getting them tuned, so I think when I get it tuned I will see if the tuner can find anything out about the police intercepter package.

There was no such thing as a police interceptor package on F-bodies that was a ford thing. The police package was the B4C camaro's, they are BSing you...
