First off- COPO is an acronym for "Central Office Production Order". It was a department in GM where people could make fleet orders (taxi cabs, etc) It became famous because a few people discovered loop holes in that cars that GM normally didn't allow certain displacement engines could be ordered there with them.

You can read here for some information on your Pontiac engine:

The most well known COPO cars are Yenko Camaros. I've never heard of any COPO Pontiacs. Pontiac blocks have the year in raised numbers by the distributor and the displacement in raised numbers on the side of the block. They can be hard to see with the engine in the car but you might be able to see them.

Use my page:
Engine Code Search

Toward the bottom of the page, shows what to look for.

The 9799140 is probably what that number should be, except the A048 sounds like a date code.
Which is Jan 4, 1968 (or 1978)

Need to recheck the engine again.

B bodies were full size cars (bonneville, Catalina, etc. ). I think all 70 455's were tapped for 4 bolt mains.
