Default 1998 Trans Am with a 462 Pontiac engine

Hello, I have been working on this little project. It is a 1998 Trans Am that I am installing a 400 Pontiac engine and a 4l80e. Here is the new K-member with new brake lines and a line lock.

Very interesting build, I'm sure the old hardcore Pontiac guys will be delighted to see your engine at shows & stuff. They'll be like YEAHH! That's how GM shoulda done it before they screwed us!

I see the engine installed in a pic in another thread. The throttle body clears the cowl very nicely. What's in the engine? Which & who's K-frame did you go with?

I also see it'll be fuel injected, what system did you go with? Were you able to add the 24x crank & 1x cam sensors to use the LS1 PCM?

What are you doing for headers?

Let's make this a build thread, post up some more pics.

The motor is a 462 Butler roller motor with a FAST multi port fuel injection set up. I will not be using any of the LS1 computer parts.

The K-member is a BMR Big Block Turbo K-member.

Way cool. Did Butler dyno the motor? How's the distributor clearance?

Engine is 600 hp 620 pft. I have all kinds of distributor room. The headers are being built for it now. I will be using a set of hand built tri y headers.

Default Wiring

I hope that I can keep the factory gauges. I think I can wire straight from the sending unit to the gauge. We will see. I also plan on keeping the A/C.

I will get more pics tomorrow. I have blacked out the engine bay. I think it looks really good. Well, better than it being red, with a big blue motor sitting in there.

I just struck gold for ya. You're a lucky man, starting in 1999, the gauges went to a digital system (data) driven by the PCM but up to 1998, it was analog.

I think all you need is here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...e-cluster.html

If you need to run or move harnesses, I HIGHLY recommend you use more than one color wire.....

Sweet!

The closest I've gotten to having an actual Pontiac in MY Pontiac was painting the Block, Valve Covers, and Intake Manifold of my LT1/4 Pontiac Engine-Block Blue.

Very Cool indeed! (Paul Bell is right - I've wanted to do this too.)

FYI - A half a dozen years or so ago, at the Tri-Power Nationals, I heard a third-gen Formula start and it made my head spin because the owner had put a 455 in it - it sounded good! I'm sure that Butler build will twist your uni-body nicely! : )

Have you had any clearance issues?

Any advice you can give to guys that are inspired to do the very same thing; i.e. - put a Pontiac in a 4th gen?

Good job and please keep us updated!

Let's see, how did this get started...... When the Carl Black Black Birds came out, I was the first owner of car #3. The only red one made that year. I sold that car when I built my new house. Very hard thing to do !!!! With that being said, I loved the way those cars handled and rode.

Then came the Macho TA #154. That car was a number matching car. So I pulled the motor and trans. I had the 462 built along with a 4l80e. I had that combo in there for a little while. I sold the Macho, the buyer wanted the correct motor and trans put back in it. So I did.

That left me with the Butler 462 and the 4l80e, with no car to put it in. So after a lot of thought as to what kind of car I wanted to put this combo in, came the idea of a 4th gen.

The only real clearance problem I have had so far is, I needed the motor to sit a little lower in the engine bay. The oil pan was hitting the steering rack,
so I lowered the steering rack 1/2 inch.

Default Radiator

I have seen many threads on radiators here, but does anyone know the measurements on just how big of a radiator we can use. I believe I will stand the radiator up. I don't mind lowering the radiator cradle. Any help would be appreciated.

I managed to get the upper and lower UMI control arms installed today. Along with the coil over shocks.

Thanks 01badbird. That is a great looking ride you have there. Great looking mods you have made for your car.

The Pontiac crest on the front of your car, what is that from ??

And did you move your wiring harness ??? Looks great!!!
