Default 2001 trans am ws6 fix / clean up thread

Bought this 01 ws6 off Craigslist for 4000 yesterday.

Had to drive 6hrs to get it but worth it. the guy bought it from his dad (original owner) in 2009 for $10,000... thanks dad haha... put 10k miles on it in 10 years.

Only a few things didn't get mentioned that I know of right now in the cl add...

Issues:
Both windows don't work
Drivers mirror mount broken
Center console door busted up
New gears and driveshaft but pinion angle not set professionally

Issues not mentioned:
Clear coat coming off on roof
oil leak
Belt sequel
Exhaust leak on drivers side manifold connection to exhaust
Small dent by drivers side door

It clunks some when put into gear / reverse in the back. Like a loose u joint or something

Pros:
Very nice interior
114k kilesAll stock except 411 gears and aftermarket driveshaft.
Aftermarket torque tube

As seen from the pictures the cleaner wax isn't aggressive enough to fix the roof.

I'm going to have to try some aggressive polish on the roof and see if it takes it away.

Of not I will try some fine sand paper and polish after.

I haven't tried googling anything yet on how to diy fix but I'm going to after I submit this post lol

Worse case it should cost about 500 bucks to have that part professionally fixed and blended

this stuff always makes me nervous, never seems to turn out very well for me, i'm not a good painter. but i tried to do this as best i can

sanded down with 800grit

paint pen to fill spots where paint was gone, or where i burned through a little bit

paint sanded flat with 800grit

a couple coats of sprat can clear coat.

waiting to dry

later today when its dry i will use 2000grid to smooth it out and try to blend it best i can.

after that i have some rubbing compound
after that i have some regular polish

after a couple days i will try to put some wax on it.

i hope after the rubbing compound it starts looking ok. i'm not trying for perfect, i'm trying for 2 things:

1. its black
2. it looks decent standing next to car

if it looks terrible i'll just bite the bullet and have the body shop down the street paint that entire piece, probably cost 500 bucks. :o

Amazingly it's turning out pretty decent.

A lot of cutting and buffing with 2000grit and rubbing compound

That's the defect from the silent recall (years ago) due to the improper primer on the roof panel. The clear coat deterioration will eventually come back unless the panel is replaced. (Unless you are doing a pristine restore of the car, it's probably not worth the expense to permanently fix.$1000+)

hopefully it will last a while i put several coats of clear coat on the roof.

i'll take some pictures later today but its actually turning out pretty decent. you can see the imperfections if you really look hard at it but i still have more cutting and buffing to do, then a final polish and we'll see.

Search sail panel bubbling and read up about it before you start pouring time and money into fixing it. Long story short the glue under the sail panel will continue to seep through and blister the paint no matter how much you sand it down and paint it. Gotta replace the whole sail panel with a 93-97 or early 98 panel to truly rid yourself of the problem.

To me this looked like clear coat peel from sitting in the sun.. it was sitting in the sun for almost 10 years in central Oregon.

I had a thought while I was working on it that I could just have that sail panel wrapped

sanded, spray clear coat, cut and buffed a bunch of times. looks good from 5 feet, once you get close you can see it plain as day.

after rubbing compound on entire car and washed.

If it looks good, I wouldn't touch it. If the car has oozing epoxy through the sail panel, it will eat through the paint again and de-laminate whatever else is put on top of it. Should you have the problem, I expect that you'd see a problem with a wrap before a paint issue would be visible.

Not bad , for the rest of the car i would suggest a porter cable 7424xp , orange ccs pad with m105 and white ccs pad with 205 , then your wax of choice. That should be less than 200 bucks for all that and get the paint looking good . The clear coat is hard on there cars so it can be brought back quite a but . Keep up the good work .

cool.

it looks like the rubbing compound is working pretty good on the rest of the car.

and the white lines of the original clear coat started showing through the new clear coat in 1 day...

i grabbed a cheap can of spray on plastidip and put it on, it looks like it might actually keep it from showing. its been a day and it looks good still except the bugs

there are a shitload of bugs and pollen in in cause i did it outside, but if it looks good other than that i'll get a new can and spray it inside

Plastidip see if it lasts

I out a big run in it doing it too fast and outside

I'll probably pull it off and spray a nice coat inside

The wrap looks great at night. It's dull in the bright sunshine. It's not too bad tho

I had it up on the ramps, fixed exhaust leak by just tightening the connection to the cat on drivers side. Pinpointed the oil leak looks like it's from the passenger valve cover. Dripping down the side of the block.

Door motors are in the mail
