Default Does Ram Air = WS6?

If you have a Ram Air Trans Am, is it the same as a WS6?

Just curious...

If someone says they have a "ram air" ta then chances are its not a ws6 or a firehawk, it was a regular ta with an aftermarket hood, but like 99formulaM6 said, check the rpo for WS6, if its not there, not a WS6 no matter what they tell you

If it came factory with a ram air hood it is either a WS6 or a Firehawk. The factory WS6 hoods are the ones that had little "ram air" decals if that's what you mean. Around here guys refer to their WS6's as "ram airs" but that term can be applied to a hood that was purchased aftermarket. Just adding the hood, of course, doesn't make it a WS6.

best way to tell if it's a real factory ram air hood is to open it up, then look at the front, right under where the nostrils are. if there are rivets underneath, then it's a true factory hood. the rivets help hold in the air dams that are inside the nostrils. on aftermarket hoods there are no rivets cuz the air dams are only glued in.

The only sure way to tell if a LS1 TA (or formy for that matter) is a true WS6 is to look for the WS6 RPO code. The only way it's possible to have a WS6 without having the ram air hood is if the owner changed the hood out which is unlikely. No code = no WS6. Another decent, but not sure, way to tell is look at the wheels. The WS-6 came with 17" polished, the TA came with 16" and they look different. Most the time when the owner just gets a hood, they don't get the proper 17" wheels that went with the true WS6 package.

Not from the factory no, a WS6 anyway, you can however get a regular TA which has the no RA hood or better suspension, bigger wheels, but im sure you knew that

On third gens (just guessing by your sig) I think ws6's did not have ram air but on 4th gens like already stated they do. I'm no third gen expert so someone correct me if I am wrong.

SS and WS-6 have the force air/ram air hoods, lower restricted exhausts, the 17"wheels like others stated, and a better suspension/handeling package.Like 99formula said check the rpo codes.

there was No ram air for the 3rd gen firebirds. If you got a formula (87-92) you automatically got WS-6 with it. if you bought a trans am, you had the option for ws-6 (which most people got) but it did nothing to the appearance of the car. The only thing that changed appearance wise, was the Hood (Turbo or Power bulge depending on what you call it) and wheels (15x7's to 16x8s) when you went from a Base Firebird to a Formula and then the ground effects, tail lights, hood (vented), and different style but same size wheels when you went to a Trans Am. There was nothing to distinguish a ws-6 car from a non ws-6 car in the third gen days appearance wise, unless you got under the car and measured the sway bars, or you found the rpo sticker, (but most of them are prolly not still there)

yeah im not a 4th gen expert. I do know a decent amount but im more of a 3rd gen guy. thanx for correcting me. i thought that what was explained in the first posts. was that you could get a WS-6 Car from the factory without the ram air hood, i thought that was another option ON TOP OF the Ws-6 package. ya learn something new everyday.

Very true. I used to own a 1987 WS6 Trans-AM.

Third gen options are WAY more complicated than fourth gens. The Trans-AM's basically have everything. They've just got options for WS6, Wheels and a CD-Changer. Color of course. Thats about it.

3rd gens are a nightmare options wise. I've never seen two that are identically optioned. Never.

I bought a ram air hood for my TA off of a WS6 that got the **** rear ended out of him. So its sort of after market, but its a genuine Ram Air hood. Now all I need is the lower air box.

With the hood, lower air box, and BGRA, i hope ill feel a big difference!
