Fans won't come on 1989 formula
I am having trouble getting the fans on a 1989 formula to work. I am looking for a service manual to help with repairs, but till I find one I am at the mercy of trying to fix it without one. Where is a good place to start looking for the problem?...where is the fan relay located? What temp should the fan come on? Can I wire it to stay on when the car is running?
thanks for any help I might get

fan relay should be somewhere by the radiator on the pass. side. Kind of up under by the headlight. Go to www.thirdgen.org and you should be able to get this resolved quickly, prolly even give you pics and schematics to go with.

I looked there, but still didn't find the relayt location. I replaced the one on the PS of the radiator and the car did not start afterwards. So I put the old on back and it cranked and ran. All the realays look the same on this car.

have u check ur cooling fan switch? The fan relay should be located on the passenger side radiator support next to the air cleaner and the evap canister. There should be 2 relays. one of them is the fan relay but i dunno which one.

I found the fan relay on the PS fender by the air cleaner canister. I checked the relay and it was good. I also jumped across the black and black and red wire and both fans came on. I did some looking and many Formula owners who see lots of track time put a 170 thermostat and install a switch and a relay to allow both fans to be turned on on demand. I am doing this to be able to turn both fans on on demand till I figure out the problem. I will get a set of shop manuals and see if I can track down the problem.

the cooling fan switch is located on the block between 6 and 8 cylinders spark plugs. I also have an 89 trans am and i have put a 160 t-stat, a hypertech cooling fan switch, and an slp chip and the car has not seen over 220 deg

OHHH between 6 and seven is hard to get to....OK I will have a look in the morning. Yeah I was going the route of the Hypertech relay....then I decided to do it my self. I finished wiring it in this evening. I used 12 ga wire and ran a jumper off the black/red wire that runs to the fans. I connected a switch to that wire and the other end of the switch I connected to a "hot when key is on" point on the fuse panel that would handle 20 amps. When the key is off the fan is off, when the car is running I can flip the switch and both fans come on. I plan to just leave the switch on most of the time and see what happens. I put a extiguisher(sp) in the car just in case...lol
