Default 5th Generation Firebird? 2006 IROC race

Yes the 2006 IROC featured the skin at least of the 4the Gen WS6. Yes the WS6. Interesting that GM would send the discontinued model. This might signal that the Firebird will be making a comeback. Usually the IROC race features current models which are all prepared the same. On Friday night my eyes were not playing tricks. Awesome finish to the race

Those cars have no GM support...hence why they're called "IROC Racers". The last time they were Factory-supported was during the 2002 season. Pontiac's support was hit-and-miss anyway. When the started running the Firebird, the Pontiac support lasted through the '98 season. The cars were called "IROC Racers" for '99, Back to being called Firebirds with Pontiac Support in 2000, once again "IROC Racers" in 2001, and then back to Pontiac Firebirds in 2002.

They've used the Firebird in the IROC Series since at least 1996, and the '98 body style ever since the '98 Season. They'll probably continue to use the car until a manufacturer steps up to support the series. I'd have to guess that it would have folded up by now if Crown Royal hadn't stepped up to sponsor the series in 2004.

As far as last night's Daytona race, Frank Kimmel should have been pulled from the race for trying to kill Steve Kinser. Just because you've won 7 ARCA Championships doesn't mean you have the right to just plow the other cars out of your way. Maybe that's how he does it in ARCA, but it was totally uncalled for last night. I can understand Sam Hornish having trouble since he doesn't race a full-bodied car, but Kimmel can't use that excuse. Maybe that's why his past attempts at racing a Cup car have failed.
