Default Bird in Storage

My father told me about some guy he new that had a 68' Firebird in storage. Come to find out its been there since 1978(has 78' inspection sticker on the window). The owner which is a friend of my father said it used to be a 6cyl car as far as he new. It has a 400 hood, factory tach in dash, Muncie 4-speed(not shure about close or wide ratio). Trunk was redone and new carpet installed in 90's. has 3 half dollar size holes in body but other than that pretty solid. Interior loooks great. Has a 350 pontiac in it right now and comes with a slightly modded 326. Also has boxes of other parts. Just wondern what i should pay for something like this? Any input would be great, thanks.

go on ebay and search the ended auctions. sounds like it could be an awesome find. if it is a friend of your dads you mite be able to get a great deal. what does the guy want for it. i would say it would be a deal at anything under 7000.

If you're wanting to get any performance out of the vehicle, I'd recommend junking the 326 and the 350, and going with a 400 or a 455. Those other two are really a waste of time, IMHO.

I'd also say to beware of body holes... there's often hidden damage that you won't discover until you start taking everything apart.

oh yeah totally the 326 and 350 are ok but i blew a 350 up in no time just normal driving. normal for a 19 year old i guess. if you want to stick with a pontiac motor get a 400 or 455 or a 428 for that matter. they are a kick to drive with a 4 speed. but you are on the ls1 site you mite consider selling the motors for what you can get. sell the muncie and get an ls1 t56 combo. it's a lot of work but it's just so cool. i am thinking about trading my 1970 firebird with a rebuilt 400 and muncie for a 68 firebird with no motor. if that happens i am definitely going ls1 if it doesn't i may sell the motor and tranny i have and go ls1 in my 70. but a 400 and muncie are definitely just a blast to drive. if you can get it for 3500 - 4000 thats a pretty good deal.

I was looking at doing a pro touring set up to it. The LS1 swap was in my interest. I would probably do the T56 swap but would a Muncie bolt to a Gen 3 or 4 small block. That way I could drive the 4 speed until i got the money for the 6 speed.

Probably just as cheap to get the LS1 and the trans together as a package deal (along with the PCM and harness that way you know it's the right PCM for the trans type)
FWIW I do believe there is an adaptor bell housing made to bolt the old style 4 speeds to the gen 3/4 small blocks (try jegs summit or advanced adaptors)
