ALL 01 + LS1's came with an LS6 intake, all the way through the 04' GTO's. You have about a 15% chance of having an LS6 block on an 01' and a 25% on an 02', the power gains (from the LS6 block)? None, its all in the heads and LS6 cam, although the LS6 block is suppose to get more oil to places.

Well you have to look behind the driver side head on the block for a specific number. I don't remember it. I checked a while ago and mine was an LS1 block. Look in JRPs FAQ..I think it is in there. BTW, getting to where you can see it isn't that easy.

I Think Trust Is Pointing You In The Right Way. And It Is All In The Heads And Cam . All Ls1 In 01,02,03 Came With Ls6 Intake. As To The Block The Camaro May Have Had A Couple Out There , But On The T/a I Don't Think They Came Out With The Ls6 Block.

Think again, my bird has LS6 numbers.

The 01+ engines have the 6.0L cam which doesn't require the EGR. So to make it cheaper GM installed LS6 intakes on all LS1 engines.

Here's the scoop on finding out if you have an LS6 block. (aside from the impossible to read part # on the back)

Right below the throttle body on the block you will see a "bullseye".

If it looks like 2 or 3 rings and looks like a bullseye, you have the LS1 block.

If that same area is filled in and you see an outline of a circle, but no circles inside the circle.. you have an LS6 block. Plus the LS6 aluminum is not as shiny as the LS1 version.

I have an LS1 block... oh well. ~Joshua

Yup, that's an example of the LS1 block. The LS6 version wouldn't have that inner circle, it would be filled in. ~Joshua

cascadesys- That's an LS6 block. Notice how you can't see a "bullseye?"

Where did you hear that, the block I'm doing my build from is an 02 LS1 block, it has an LS1 casting number, even the thing I have to cut for the LS6 PCV system, and a VIN Number from an 02 WS6.

Sweet, so I guess I have an LS6 block. I feel special.

What sort of benefits if any does having an LS6 block over an LS1 block?

The LS6 has slightly larger bay-to-bay holes casted between the cylinders (at the bottom of the bores). It lets air move around at higher rpm with a bit less turbulence so there isn't as much whipping of the oil.

Slightly more reinforcement in the webbing, and the alloy is slightly stronger than the LS1 alloy.

Performance gain compaired to a 600hp motor using an LS1 block...ZERO.
