1989 Turbo TransAm
Has anybody expressed an interest in any of the 1989 Turbo TransAms or has there ever been a history/talk about it in here?

About six years ago about 6 of us from Houston that own/owned one of the Turbo TransAms met in Austin with 5 others from around there and 1 in Oklahoma. I just got mine back on the road after finding another rear end for it. It's a hard top meaning it's a little more rare than the other 1400 that have T-Tops. I just spoke with my friend that has his all tricked out (around 500+ he mentioned) and was just wanting to purge any TTA owner/lurkers here into starting another get together like we did for a while around 2000-2001.

There have been a few conversations about them, not sure how far back. Nice cars though, my boss has 2 of em, one has 40 miles and still in the unprepped status with plastic on seats and all the usual bs.

The 89 turbos used and updated version of the infamous Grand National turbo 3.8. Incedentally the only other GM vehicle to use it. They were, and still are, some of the absolute fastest Trans Ams ever made. Including our latest LS1s, the SD455s, and Ram Air IVs.

Nice car man. I love those Tubro TAs they are supposedly the quickest factory TA ever. Plus I love the 3rd gen look I almost bought one once, it was a white with tan interior and had the gold snowflake style rims, it was a sweet car.

Yea, there is a hint of pride owning one of them until you go to look for parts that are almost extinct as in the rims, taildeck spoiler ($400 from another manufacturer), and the emblems (harder to find than a whiskey drinking nun).

Thanks guys. So far I've only been able to pull up for the GTA's and the Regular TA's. Does anybody know any place in Houston where I can buy the golflake 1 inch lipped rims? I've been going nuts doing searches. Maybe I should break down and give them to the rim restorer's to work with?

I think I've seen some stuf about them on thirdgen.org. I remember one thread that had a turbo trans am with like 4k miles on it at a show.
So what kind of engines did these cars have in them? did they have those turbocharged 3.8's mentioned earlier or were they v8's?

If I'm correct, when Buick was through building the Grand Nationsl in 88, they had 1550 of the 6 cylinder 231 c.i 3.8 turbo motors left on the shelf. GM decided to why not put it in their 20th anniversary trans-am. The rest is history from there.
